It was a grand celebration at the Boone County Museum of History earlier this month celebrating the longevity, evolution and prosperity of the Panhellenic Society of Belvidere. The two hours flew by as we reminisced, laughed and nibbled. Sarah (Foster) recounted the roles and advancements of women throughout the last century, guest Maggie Polsean from WIFR-TV shared personal insights and lessons learned from her own sorority days, and Jean (Twyning) closed out the afternoon with a wonderful summary of our history, social offerings, fundraising efforts and scholarship program. It was a joy to welcome a few former scholarship recipients at the event and catch up with supporting and former members. Special thanks to the anniversary committee for its work in organizing the event. What a wonderful commemoration of our centennial!

We had a wonderful time at the Funderburg House this afternoon. It was a festive backdrop for our Christmas tea. This year, our holiday philanthropy was the Baby Bank in Belvidere. We are happy to support this local organization which supports young families. Merry Christmas, everyone!

It was a crisp fall night earlier this week when Belvidere Panhellenic members gathered at Pettit Memorial Chapel for a social hour and history lesson. Cemetery sextant Sam Larson and our own Jean Twyning shared the story of how the memorial came to be, its use through the decades and eventual restoration. Other Panhel members also shared stories of note about the building. All in attendance enjoyed tasty treats and refreshments. It was a wonderful outing at this iconic architectural gem in our own backyard. (Panhellenic group photo at the end.)

Here are a few tidbits from our history lesson:
Emma Pettit commissioned Frank Lloyd Wright to design the memorial for her late husband, William Pettit.
Completed in 1907. Cost $3000 to build. Used for funerals through the 1920s (no funeral homes existed until then). Then became a glorified tool shed for many years and fell in disrepair.
Stairs fell apart. Boarded up the windows. Jr. Women's Club decided to refurbish it in late 70s. Had it declared a historical site. Secured state grant for 25K (but only good for one year). 48 Women's Club members at the time. Accepted bid for $45k. Did fundraising (sold cookbooks, organized house walks, etc). Dedication in 1981.

There's our good friend and Belvidere Panhel member, Lauren Hart, getting her students outside the classroom and broadening their experiences. Knowing her like we do, it's not that surprising...but no less impressive. Nice job, Lauren!
