It takes years living in community to find out where the need REALLY is in Jamaican & Haitian communities. Pride in their ability to help on another and to provide for themselves is a strong motivator to silence. The woman who lives in this home cares for 3 of her own children along with other children. We were grateful to be invited in with a team to renovate her kids' bedroom in June. At that time, we noted the roof's disrepair and other safety issues. With the help of the community of J-Town and a donation from , KONBIT has fully replaced her roof. The guys did quality work, and the finishing touches, including a new ceiling in Mom's room, were finished in August. There is one more project in her home that we want to tackle for her and her children's safety. If you would like to help but want more information, comment on this post.

They work harder than you do. I said it. I would even bet they could take you in an arm wrestling match. They are career laundresses who have used their hands to make a living for all their days.

This mother-daughter duo are actually a grandmother and a great-grandmother with gaggles of big and small people who call them Mama. They have lost the home they were living in for 50 years because the relative who loaned it to them needed it back. We wanted to bless them with some appliances for the bathroom in their new house. When we stopped by to deliver the the toilet, sink, and faucet, the great-grandmother, with a grin from ear to ear, just kept saying, "Thank you, God, Thank you, God!" We discovered that they had to leave that very weekend, and all they were waiting on was the bathroom fixtures. We may have known the need, but we did not know the timing; God did.

Watching God answer prayers in real time will NEVER get old. Thank you, God!

Meals on 2 Wheels member's medical crisis

Since the gangs displaced them, she and her daughter and soon-to-be 3 grandchildren live in temporary housing on someone else's land. They have scratched out an existence up a mountain path with no route that even a motorcycle can take. As her health deteriorated, her daughter struggled to know how to even get her to medical care. Hospitals do not feed patients, and all patients need someone present to help with their care. Unsure how she would even manage having her mother in the hospital because of her children and 3rd trimester pregnancy, she just froze in inaction at a loss for where to begin. When KONBIT was given this information, we immediately sent a nurse to the home to evaluate the situation. She gave us the green light to get her to care. But how could we transport her? She cannot walk, and the road is too difficult for her to be carried, which we have done many times for her and others.

Haitians are the epitome of “making it work.” In Creole, the word is “degaje.”

Once her daughter knew she had KONBIT behind her, she figured it out. We paid 2 men to use their wheelbarrow, which blankets were laid in, to move her mother down the steep and rutted goat path to KONBIT’s waiting vehicle.

Her mother made it to care and has been seeing an American doctor and staying near the clinic in the days since. She has accumulated fluid around her heart and lungs that was preventing her from breathing well. They have been removing the fluid at regular appointments, and she is improving every day. Please pray for her and Haiti Health Ministries , who work so hard to serve the people of Haiti.

J-Town Teens gathering was so much fun, it hurt a little.

People fell off a wall; it was short. Cake tumbled to the floor; it was replaced. Tears fell, from laughter. A candy takedown ensued, but in the end, everyone got a share.

This group of absolutely STELLAR young men and women got together to talk Jesus for a bit. We demolished 20 burgers with all the fixins, 4 boxes of Velveeta shells and cheese, 2 large bags of FF, a giant chocolate cake, a gallon of ice cream, and about 50 pieces of candy.

We dove deep into having life vision and decision-making, Jesus-style. They each received a Bible Promise Book, and those who had yet to get a Bible from us were given one. They asked great questions and contributed wonderful perspective.

The game time was fierce as usual, but they had so much fun cheering for one another as much as they picked on each other after rotten shots.

We handed out prizes and just enjoyed being together. Teens have VERY few fun and SAFE events here. They loved every minute, and we did too!

Loving well is in the little things. We redid a neighbor's room in June. She had a much-loved but broken picture of the 10 commandments on her wall. The Colemans had a frame they painted gold so it would be more formal, and they created this picture so God's Word would once again be on her wall. The flowers match her newly painted room perfectly.

God cares about the little things, and so should we.

Back to School Movie Night was a SMASHING success!

The school supplies are now in the hands of 60 kids who really needed the help. Calculators, markers, crayons, folders, notebooks, pencils, pens, erasers, sharpeners, pencil cases, and lots of love were poured into each backpack. Notes to the kids about another school year and God’s big dreams for each of their lives were in each bag. Parents' bags with a first aid kit and tissues were given to 20 parents with an encouraging note about how to be the parent God wants them to be. This was made possible by 3 SEPARATE teams! One collected most of the school supplies and packed the kids' bags. Another provided the parents' pack supplies, packed them, and attached the notes to the kids' and parents' bags. And yet another group filled each bag with snacks and candy, finishing by praying over all the bags. Keisha, Alex, and Andre were the fierce Jamaican staff who worked to clean the venue and helped us with equipment transport, set-up, crowd control, tear-down, clean up, and return transport of equipment to the KONBIT house in Jamaica. What would we do without them!

We talked about David and how God looks at what is on the inside of us, our hearts, not our outward appearance. Our height or clothes or hair or beauty do not convey our courage or honesty or faithfulness or humility. God sees what people cannot, and sees worth where people may see want.

Thank you to all the people who worked over the last few months to make this happen! Haiti has a saying, “yon sel dwet, pa manje kalalou.” That means, “You can’t eat okra with one finger”. The fingers have to work together to grab those slippery little vegetables. The Back to School Movie night is okra, folks, and we could never have made it as impactful and successful without your help.
