I must say this — I, Sarah Meakins, am a proud parent and alumni of BSD124, and moments like this remind me why. It truly means everything to these kids to hear the crowd shouting for them. Please bring your neighbor, invite the aunts and uncles — these athletes have come so very far in such a short time, and they deserve to feel that support.
BMS truly had no idea the middle school wrestling program would blow up the way it has this year.... they were scrambling to find uniforms and singlets for every kid. This is why the singlets don't match. And honestly? That is an amazing problem to have. Kids who are involved in activities and sports are more connected, more supported, and more confident.....and having a team and community behind you matters more than people realize.
I also want to take a moment to recognize something incredibly special I witnessed at The Battle of the Braids tournament in Independence. Our high school girls had already finished competing then the middle school matches moved into the main gym. They could have waited off to the side, packed it in, or headed out... but instead, they stepped up in the biggest way.

Those young women in the purple blanket suits didn’t just stick around ....they became the loudest supporters for the next generation of female wrestlers. I was genuinely warmed to my soul watching high school athletes cheer for middle school Pirates they didn’t personally know. They celebrated wins, offered encouragement after losses, and even posed for pictures afterward. Their coaches literally had to tell them, “Okay, it’s time to leave.” That kind of support doesn’t happen by accident.
That is outstanding coaching. That is strong leadership. That is beautiful parenting.
The BSD124 Wrestling community and coaching staff are some of the most dedicated, supportive individuals around, and it shows in these kids.... on and off the mat!! Coach Landis has done an incredible job building something special here, and I cannot wait to watch these athletes continue their journey into high school and beyond.
So let’s show up for them.
Let’s pack the freezing-cold parking lot.
Let’s have standing room only all the way through our final wrestler.
Come support our next generation of youth athletes — because what’s happening here is truly something special. 💜🤼♀️
