As a western vehicle collector, historian, speaker, and author, David Sneed has vigorously pursued the legendary wheels of the American West for close to three and a half decades. It’s a hunt for history that’s helped uncover ultra-rare resources in all fifty of the United States. Focusing on the specific farm, freight, ranch, coach, business, and military vehicles that built the western frontier, Sneed is involved in daily research while overseeing thousands of artifacts. Building on his studies, he has written over 500 articles and feature-length blogs related to these early transports.
He is the founder of the Wheels That Won The West® Archives, a compilation of scarce and all-but-forgotten records highlighting America’s first transportation industry. Included among the files are countless original catalogs, primary source photographs, patent records, promotional materials, business correspondence, and other rare ephemera and historic details. The sheer volume of materials is believed to be the world’s largest private collection of western vehicle archives. They are a treasure trove of valuable leads and insights as well as an unmatched link to the Old West.
Sneed’s research and articles have been published by the American Chuck Wagon Association, Santa Fe Trail Association, National Stagecoach and Freight Wagon Association, U.S. Dept. of the Interior/Arizona Bureau of Reclamation, MoDOT Archaeology Division, The Carriage Journal, Farm Collector, Wild West, and Driving Digest magazines as well as the French magazine, Attelages, the Italian publication, Il Notiziario, the Wheels That Won The West® website, and numerous other traditional and on-line publications.
His speaking engagements have taken him throughout the U.S., sharing with audiences at the Buffalo Bill Center of the West in Wyoming, Missouri History Museum in St. Louis, Colonial Williamsburg in Virginia, Dulles Hilton in Virginia, the Santa Ynez Historical Museum in California, Cowgirl Hall of Fame in Texas, Council Grove Rendezvous in Kansas, National Cowboy & Western Heritage Museum in Oklahoma, the Wyoming State Fair, and Santa Fe and Oregon Trail studies in multiple states. He has also appeared in multiple television documentaries focused on American wagons and stagecoaches.
Complementing his active research and writings, Sneed also does early vehicle consulting, evaluations, brand identification, authentication work, and assists other collectors with purchase questions and appraisals. Some elements of the ‘Wheels’ collection are shared through limited edition prints, custom books, seminars, and other special projects. His familiarity with the early western vehicle industry has filled a crucial gap for enthusiasts and, today, products and information from the Wheels That Won The West® Archives can be found in homes, businesses, museums, and special events throughout the world.
