The Dunham Township Volunteer Fire Department will host a Trunk-or-Treat at the fire station on Thursday, October 29, 2026 from 6:00 to 8:00 pm. Please stop by with your children and let them get an early start on Halloween. The station is located at 5770 Veto Road which is behind the Dollar General approximately .2 miles east of Ohio State Route 339. Happy haunting and we hope to see you on the 29th.

It is Fire Prevention Week! Yesterday, your fire department, along with the Barlow, Warren and Little Hocking Fire Departments (Wesley Fire Department was unable to participate this year due to unforseen circumstances), participated in educating children at Warren Elementary School in preventing fires and in fire safety in the event there is one. If your child is a kindergartener, first grader or second grader, they learned these skills. They got a "tour" of an ambulance and fire truck and saw the equipment contained on both. They also got to watch a firefighter "don" his turnout gear and then an SCBA.

This is a great time for you to talk with your children about a plan to get out of your house in the event of a fire. Make sure they know two ways out of your house and where the family meeting place is for everyone to gather outside of your house in the event of a fire. Be certain they know they are not allowed to play with matches, lighters or candles.

If you have any questions about these or other fire prevention/safety matters, please stop by the fire station on any Thursday evening at 7:00 pm.

Yesterday was a busy day at the Barlow Fair. Many noodles, hot dogs, barbecue chicken sandwiches and nachos were served at the Noodle Hut. For over 30 years we have been selling homemade noodles (and other items) at the fair and stilluse the same recipe. Please stop by for some hometown goodness and enjoy a fair tradition.

Also, watch for our new fire engine in the parade this evening (Engine 82). She is a beauty and this will be her first public appearance. She is not quite "in service" yet as we are still getting equipment mounted in her compartments. We will let you know when she is ready for service.

As leaves begin to fall, please remember that outdoor burning between 6:00 am and 6:00 pm is not permitted during the months of October and November (and March, April and May). Please help us keep our township from experiencing a wildland fire . . . and keep yourself from being in trouble with the Division of Forestry.

BURN BAN IN EFFECT

A reminder that Ohio’s seasonal open burning restrictions are now in effect.

Under Ohio Revised Code 1503.18, open burning is prohibited between 6:00 a.m. and 6:00 p.m. during the months of March, April, May, October, and November in areas covered by the law.

This restriction includes the open burning of wood, brush, weeds, grass, and rubbish. Anyone conducting a permitted fire should take appropriate precautions to prevent the fire from escaping and must not leave the fire until it has been extinguished or safely covered.

Please use caution during dry conditions and help prevent unnecessary fires.

The Noodle Hut got a bath today in preparation for the Barlow Fair beginning next week. Kenna helped! The Noodle hut will be open before noon next Thursday, October 1st. Stop by for some homemade egg noodles with homemade grilled chicken!

Egg noodles have been made and are in the freezer. Stop by and get some homemade chicken noodles (we grill our own chicken halves and then pick the meat) at our Noodle Hut at the Barlow Fair. The Noodle Hut will open on Thursday, October 1st and will be open each day of the Fair (or until we are sold out). We will also have hot dogs, barbecue chicken sandwiches and nachos. If you would like to serve your community and be a part of our department, talk to one of us there and we will get you an application.

Kenna visited patients at Elison Assisted Living and Memory Care in Reno this morning. She loves to bring joy to the patients . . . and loves being petted by them, too.

A couple of months ago, Kenna and her handler began the long process of becoming certified in Search and Rescue . . . Kenna will be certified in Trailing and her handler as a Search and Rescue Technician. Today, in training at Kanawha State Forest outside of Charleston, WV, she had her first two "finds". On two occasions, she walked to where she last saw her "victim" and then had to rely on the victim's scent to locate her. She has a long way to go but she is demonstrating encouraging signs of being able to follow a trail. Once they are certified, she will be able to search for lost individuals in our township and beyond.

This is not a local story . . . but the same thing could happen here or in one of our neighboring townships. We pray that it never does however, know that if the need arises, we and our mutual aid partners will show up with as many tru as as we are able to safely staff and I am certain that will be more than $2,000,000 in equipment!

Water + water loving Golden Retriever = a mess! Cleaning the rubber compartment liners on the Squad today and Kenna had to "help". One part cleaning and two parts keeping her from getting soaked.

We constantly work to keep the station, trucks and equipment clean and well maintained. If you would like to be a part of our department, stop by the station on Veto Road and talk with us any Thursday evening at 7:00 pm.
