Meet Mariam, one of New England JFON’s most notable successful cases so far this year.

Mariam is the founder of a Ugandan nonprofit dedicated to youth education and civic engagement. Government authorities repeatedly raided her youth center, beat her and arrested her. She finally fled to the U.S. in June 2024 while under another active arrest warrant.

Upon arriving, she applied for asylum, but her attorney filed her initial petition without supporting documentation. The attorney then failed to appear at Mariam’s immigration interview, and Mariam, who suffers from PTSD and related memory difficulties, was left to explain her complex case alone. Her application was denied.

Mariam found New England JFON through the MACI program just two months before her final follow-up hearing in May 2026. Our legal team worked tirelessly alongside her to build a complete case. At the hearing, the judge quickly found her testimony credible after reviewing hundreds of pages of evidence, and, in an unusual move, the government waived its right to appeal — making the asylum grant final that day. Mariam is now building her new life in the U.S. while also continuing work with her Ugandan nonprofit. She hopes to reunite with her son soon so that he, too, can enjoy a life of safety and promise.

This latest grant will help ensure that more immigrants across Massachusetts can navigate their increasingly-complex immigration case with a trusted guide by their side.

This marks the fourth grant that we have received from the Foundation, and they have played a critical role in our growth over the last few years. We thank them for standing with our clients and for their ongoing partnership.

From 2021 to 2025, the number of Massachusetts cities and towns we served increased by nearly 63%, allowing us to bring immigration legal services to more communities across the region. This change was driven partly by the introduction of remote services and partly by the addition of new programs. With our 2026 expansion of Advice & Advocacy, this number will continue to grow.

Our supporters make this growth possible, allowing us to help more immigrants across a growing service area. If you live in a town served by New England JFON, please consider making a donation today: https://donorbox.org/new-england-jfon-2.

New England Justice for Our Neighbors has recently completed our first contract as a legal service provider for the Massachusetts Access to Counsel Initiative (MACI).

Through MACI, eligible Massachusetts residents facing deportation can be connected with free legal representation through a statewide network of trusted nonprofit organizations. By joining this initiative, New England JFON is expanding access to high-quality immigration legal services for even more individuals and families navigating one of the most momentous challenges of their lives.

We are grateful to the Commonwealth of Massachusetts for stepping up when immigrants most need our help and look forward to continuing our partnership.

New England JFON is celebrating a major milestone - we recently served our 2000th client!

New England JFON opened our doors in late 2012 in Maine and early 2013 in Springfield, MA, quickly expanding from there. We hope (and believe) that our founders would be both proud of and astonished by what we have become.

These 2000 clients were seen across all of our programs, from our original Advice & Advocacy to our newest program, MACI. They include unaccompanied youth, asylum seekers, and survivors of violence. 2000 people who left impossible conditions in hopes of finding safety and new roots and were accompanied on their way by our organization.

We are deeply grateful to the volunteers, partners, staff members, donors, and supporters who have all contributed to this achievement.

Here's to the next 2,000 clients and the futures we help build together.

Please celebrate with us by making a donation in their honor: https://donorbox.org/new-england-jfon-2
