Explore & Soar Reading Club

Explore & Soar Reading Club We are an after-school reading program for 2nd and 3rd graders who are struggling to meet grade-level expectations.

The program meets four days a week (Mon-Thurs) from October to May. Now beginning our 10th year, our programs helps 2nd and 3rd grade students in northern Kent County to improve their reading level by an average of 1.5 years. Students are referred by their teachers after the initial Fall reading assessments. Eligible students are those who are struggling to meet grade-level expectations. Our Readi

ng Club is modeled on the YET program (Youth Education for Tomorrow) from Philadelphia. This program is a very important part of our church’s outreach mission. The Reading Club is free to students and is funded by grants, donations, and individuals. The program is offered as a service of the Loaves & Fishes Family Center, a non-profit 501(c)(3) organization. We always welcome and need your financial support. Checks can be made payable to Loaves & Fishes Family Center and mailed to Holy Spirit Episcopal Church, or make a donation via PayPal using a major credit card or PayPal account: all contributions made through the "Donate" button on this page go directly to the Reading Club. All or part of your gift may be tax-deductible as a charitable contribution (please check with your tax adviser). Or support the Reading Club through Smile.Amazon.com by searching for Loaves and Fishes Family Center (in Belmont, MI).

We are so sorry to let you know that the Explore & Soar Reading Club is closing permanently. The board of directors has not been able to find a way to continue after being closed since the beginning of the pandemic. We thank everyone who entrusted their children to us as we helped them become confident readers. We thank the children for their hard work and the joy they brought to us. We also thank those from Holy Spirit Episcopal Church and the greater community who supported us since 2008. Thank you all.

We are sad to announce that Explore & Soar Reading club will not be opening this fall. With the status of the Covid virus still being somewhat questionable, the board feels that we should stay closed for now.

Our Story

For 12 years, our programs has helped 2nd and 3rd grade students in northern Kent County to improve their reading level by an average of 1.5 years. Students are referred by their teachers after the initial Fall reading assessments. Eligible students are those who are struggling to meet grade-level expectations. Our Reading Club is modeled on the YET program (Youth Education for Tomorrow) from Philadelphia. A certified teacher, an assistant teacher and volunteers help the students with reading comprehension, vocabulary, writing, and building confidence. The Reading Club is free to students and is funded by grants, donations, and individuals. The program is offered as a service of the Loaves & Fishes Family Center, a non-profit 501(c)(3) organization housed at Holy Spirit Episcopal Church. We always welcome and need your financial support. Checks can be made payable to Explore & Soar Reading Club and mailed to us at Holy Spirit Episcopal Church, or make a donation via PayPal using a major credit card or PayPal account: all contributions made through the "Donate" button on this page go directly to the Reading Club. All or part of your gift may be tax-deductible as a charitable contribution (please check with your tax adviser).
