Just 6 miles northwest of downtown Boston, Habitat Education Center and Wildlife Sanctuary is a 90-acre urban oasis that has been devoted to environmental education since 1970. Over 2.5 miles of gentle trails wind through deciduous and evergreen forests, across meadows, around 2 ponds, and along a wetland containing a vernal pool. Outside, there’s a pleasing and calming formal garden. The building and gardens can be reserved on weekends for weddings and other events.

What's that loud, deep croaking coming from the pond? 🐸

It's Bullfrog mating season, and you can hear them calling from half a mile away or more. Take a walk around turtle pond and keep an eye out for splashing along the water's edge as they hop around—they're a lot bigger than you might expect!

This juvenile Red-tailed Hawk has been frequenting our community gardens lately. Something tells us it’s not here for the veggies, but there’s a good chance we’re getting extra help with pest control instead!

Tucked under an umbrella of leaves, the mysterious Jack-in-the-pulpit is blooming ☂

Unlike other flowers, these guys are pollinated by small flies and fungus gnats. While the shape is similar to that of carnivorous pitcher plants, they aren't carnivorous...though many unsuspecting insects do become trapped inside. Keep an eye out in moist areas near water to see if you can spot them!

Pink Lady's Slippers are blooming! These native orchids can live up to 20 years, but not every plant blooms each year. This season looks like a fruitful one for us, so keep your eyes open as you walk through the pine forests 🌷 (These flowers are sensitive, so it's important to look and leave them be so they can stay wild.)
