Knitted Knockers

Knitted Knockers Connecting volunteer knitters with breast cancer survivors to offer free knitted knockers, (soft, comfortable, knit prosthetics made by volunteers).
(2)

"Knitted knockers" are an alternative for breast cancer survivors who have had mastectomies or lumpectomies with radiation. Knitted knockers are a soft, comfortable, light alternative to traditional breast prosthesis. They can be worn with most regular bras and can be worn shortly after surgery. They are made by volunteers, and are adjustable for those going through reconstruction. Our purpose is

to connect volunteer knitters with breast cancer survivors to offer FREE knitted knockers. http://www.knittedknockers.org/ to request a pair of knitted knockers or learn how to help provide them.

"We may not be able to provide every woman with a surgical option, but we can offer her something just as powerful: comfort, dignity, and the assurance that she is not alone. Sometimes, a soft knocker and a kind word are all it takes to help restore her confidence." 😍🫢🏼πŸ₯°

Chrissy didn't find Knitted Knockers through a doctor or a pamphlet. She found us the way so many do β€” alone, scared, newly diagnosed, googling in the middle of the night.

Her journey has been, in her words, "a very hard journey the entire time." She lost her first expander to a staph infection. That meant no reconstruction β€” not until after radiation and immunotherapy were finished. For a full year, she waited. And during that year, she had her Knitted Knockers. "For a year, Knitted Knockers made me feel like a person again β€” and for that, I am forever grateful." 🫢

She laughs a little telling the story of her first pair: "I giggled a little because I didn't have a ni**le on either side and the knitted knockers gave me one a little β€” but I loved them. I was so grateful someone took the time to make them for me."πŸ€—

Here's what Chrissy wants the world to understand: "People think they know what it's like to lose your breasts like it's no big deal, like we should just be lucky to be alive. And while we are lucky, we still feel a way that nobody should ever have to feel. During the time that I could wear the knitted knockers, I actually felt half normal those days β€” and that means more than you know." πŸ’—
She's hoping her last surgery is behind her now. Fingers crossed. 🀞🏻
To every volunteer who makes a pair β€” you are someone's "half normal." Thank you.

❓ How much do Knitted Knockers cost?
Not a single penny. 🩷 Knitted Knockers are completely FREE to any woman who needs them β€” no application, no insurance, no income requirements. Just reach out, and we'll take care of the rest.

Every single knocker is handmade by a volunteer knitter or crocheter who simply wanted to make a difference. That's it. That's the whole story. 🫢

Knitted Knockers Support Foundation (knittedknockers.org) is a U.S.-based 501(c)(3) nonprofit that runs entirely on donations and the hands of our incredible volunteers. No one on our team earns a wage β€” every role, every task, every package mailed is done by someone who showed up out of love. πŸ˜‡ And there are real costs behind the scenes β€” postage alone runs over $5,000 every single month, plus print materials, and stuffing. Every dollar comes from generous donors who believe every woman deserves comfort, confidence, and dignity after breast cancer. ✨

So if you or someone you love needs a pair β€” please reach out. They are yours, made with love, at no cost. 🧢
πŸ’• And if you're in a position to give, donations are always welcome at knittedknockers.org/donations β€” because every dollar helps us say yes to the next woman who asks.

Jo Anne found Knitted Knockers through her company's list of supported charities. The name caught her eye. She looked it up, thought the idea was wonderful, and started crocheting. Then she learned to knit. Then she became a state supplier.

She laughs a little about her first pair. "My first set was awful! I had to rip it out and start over. It was even worse when I first learned to knit β€” I think I ripped it apart a half dozen times!" But she kept going, because she knew exactly why it had to be right. "I wanted it to be perfect β€” to communicate to the woman receiving them that they were made with love and care specifically for them."

That's it. That's the whole heart of what our volunteers do. πŸ’—

Jo Anne loves that the giving is anonymous. She will never know the name of the woman who opens the package she so carefully prepared. And somehow, that makes it even more meaningful. "Sending in a well-made pair is really satisfying for me β€” and I love that it is anonymous. I am doing this for someone else whose name I will never know."

She once heard from a woman whose elderly mother had refused to leave her room at her nursing home after her mastectomy. She wouldn't go to meals. She wouldn't see visitors. She stayed in her room β€” until a pair of Knitted Knockers arrived. "That's why I'll volunteer as long as I am able."

If you knit or crochet and have been thinking about joining us, Jo Anne wants you to know: "Want to find connection? Join the KK community. The positive energy abounds." πŸ’•

If you're a knitter or crocheter in the Pacific Northwest, you need to know about Apple Yarns. 🩷This gem of a shop in Bellingham, WA is doing all the right things β€” and we love sharing about it.

Apple Yarns just opened a beautiful new Stitch Studio β€” and every Wednesday from 10am–12pm, makers gather around the table to knit, connect, and create something meaningful together. πŸ€— It's the kind of place where you walk in for yarn and leave with friends.

And speaking of yarn β€” Pandamonium by Cascade has become a shop favorite. Soft, gorgeous, great yardage, and gentle on the budget. The neutrals can barely stay on the shelf. 🧢 It's one of our go-to recommendations for making Knitted Knockers, so if you're near Bellingham, go grab some!

There's even more good news ahead. Apple Yarns is welcoming a brand new instructor, and they are excited to get her started on an event this October for KnittedKnockers.org. πŸ˜‡ Whether you're new to knitting or a seasoned maker, this is a beautiful way to give back, one stitch at a time. And if you love cozy season as much as we do β€” mark your calendar for August, when Apple Yarns opens reservations for their beloved Holiday Movie Box. πŸš‚βœ¨ This year's theme? The Winter Express. Two years running as their best seller, and we can see why.

We are so grateful for shops like Apple Yarns that open their doors, build community, and say yes to making a difference. 🫢 Is there a yarn shop in your community that supports Knitted Knockers? Tag them below β€” we love celebrating the shops that show up for this mission! πŸ’•

When Heidi was diagnosed with breast cancer, her first thought wasn't about herself. "All I could think about was who would take care of my husband and my mom." πŸ˜‡

Heidi is a caregiver. Her husband is disabled and on home hemodialysis β€” she runs the machine herself. Her mom had just gotten out of the hospital. Five weeks after her mastectomy, while still recovering, Heidi lost her mom.
She was Stage 1b β€” no chemo, no radiation. She felt "truly blessed" for that. But her insurance wouldn't cover a prosthetic. And the weight of everything β€” the surgery, the grief, the caregiving β€” was heavy. Then she got her Knitted Knockers. "When I got my knockers, I felt like a new person."

The volunteer who made them tucked in a handwritten note. πŸ’Œ That note mattered. "The person who made mine made me feel special during a difficult time. I wear one every day." Heidi puts it simply: "Every woman should be able to feel beautiful, complete and comfortable."

We couldn't agree more. πŸ’— If you or someone you love could use a free pair of hand-knit prosthetics, visit knittedknockers.org to request them. And if you knit or crochet, you could be the one who writes the note that changes everything.
