Top 15 albums from 2025: Dean Johnson’s I Hope We Can Still Be Friends. This is probably my most listened to album of last year and IMO it’s perfect. The expectations were high, after the perfect debut Nothing For Me, Please. The titles, the art and of course and most of all the songs. I remember seeing Dean before the release of the album and his set was almost all these new to me songs (vs the ones from the prior album) and being SO excited and entranced by them. You know sometimes you go into a show and you are wanting to hear all those songs you know and when the musician plays new ones instead (and pretty much exclusively) sometimes it’s a little disappointing? Not these ones! So Much Better is my song of the year and like the rest of his catalog it just doesn’t get old to me no matter how much we listen to it. Thanks for the tunes Dean and hope to see you again soon!

Top 15 albums from 2025: Jeffrey Lewis’ Even More Freewheelin’ with Jeffrey Lewis. I mean, starting with the cover/title. DJPJ and I have the clothed version of this photo of us hanging in our living room. Jeffrey is one of my most favorite songwriters, he has me laughing and crying with every album (often the same song). Modern renaissance man multi-medium storyteller because he’s also a fantastic artist (check out Fuff comics). Even though this guy tours a lot, somehow we have missed him every time he’s been in PNW for the last several years. I absolutely cannot wait to see Jeffrey at WWU in Feb. Hope to see you there too.

Top 15 albums from 2025: Michael Hurley’s Broken Homes and Gardens. You all knew I wouldn’t leave this one off. After losing Snock on April Fools this love note from the great unknown was a little gift to all of us here missing him. I’m not religious or spiritual but it seems like he can’t be gone but just playing a cosmic joke and I remember that we can always listen and feel our beloved musicians with us for our whole lives. Sorry, this is about Michael Hurley, but I’m all misted up about Bob Weir’s passing today as well. Thanks to them both for sharing their light with me and all the appreciators. Shoutout to two others that are represented elsewhere here that also appear on this album legends and )

Top 15 albums from 2025: John Elliott’s (note: two ls, two ts) I am John Mayer. So, I’ve been a big fan since a long previous of John’s and this year I was witness to one of my fav moments in 2025 live music for my personal debut exposure of this song. If you haven’t heard it, highly recommend watching the full album video on YouTube with John riding this bike on CA, which is the most John Elliott thing I’ve ever seen and perfect.

Top 15 albums from 2025: Fruit Bats’ Baby Man. You all knew this was going to be on here as this is one of my all time favorite bands. This album is be RT different, Eric D. Johnson has spoke a lot about the departure/stripped down vibe but I love it so much. And I mean, what’s more beautiful than a totally sincere and tear jerking ode to Pinto and all good dogs (rip to our own Floyd dog who also came from the garage bin) everywhere? Thanks for the gorgeous tunes.

Top 15 albums from 2025: Rose City Band’s Sol and Sombra. My favorite psychedelic cowboy jammers. Im a sucker for the country/psych crossover and honestly, now that I think about it, they feel like this reach back to my formative days in the south and my current life in PNW blending. I could listen to their entire discography on an endless loop soundtracking the roadtrip of life. This album continues a streak of impeccable albums from Riley and crew.

Top 15 albums from 2025: Jackson and the Janks’ Write it Down. I think this is the last of what I would call a “newcomer” into my orbit this year. I love the throwback sound. If you listen to Night Moves, you know I don’t do “songs” of the year and I won’t put an album on my top list just for one song, so that’s saying the whole album is great and there are many excellent songs (if not all). but man, Windowsill lived in my head more than anything else in summer/early fall 2025.

Top 15 albums from 2025: Dove Ellis’ Blizzard. New find for me and I can’t stop listening to this album. It’s my alternative to Geese that I just can’t get, so I’ll take Dove (who apparently opened for Geese’s last tour). Sounding at times like 90s Thom Yorke and times like the often compare Buckleys. Addictive.

Top 15 albums from 2025: Small Paul’s I Was Love, I Was Light. These guys are so great. Put on an epic live show and it translates to the album recording too. Filling the Moondoggies shaped whole in our hearts. Thanks Kevin, Chris and crew for the magical tunes.
