Today we will highlight a token brought to us by a brother who recently visited Scotland, one of the birthplaces of modern Freemasonry. This pin is from the "Lodge Mother Kilwinning" in Ayrshire on the eastern shore of Britain. The lodge is so called because it is reputed to be the oldest Masonic Lodge in Scotland, claiming origins to a group of operative stonemasons (Italian or German) who came to Ayrshire in the 12th century to build the nearby Kilwinning Abbey. George Shaw, while serving as the Master of Works for James IV in 1599, wrote in his famous Shaw Statutes and Ordinances "...to be obseruit by all the maister maoissounis within this realme":

"...ye warden of ye lug of Kilwynning to tak tryall of ye airt of memorie and science yrof, of everie fellowe of craft and everie prenteiss according to ayr of yr vocations".

On this day in 1897, Leo Taxil called a public meeting in Paris where he thanked the many journalists and clergymen who, over the preceding 12 years, had unknowingly helped him expose the fanatic anti-masonic sentiments existing in the Catholic church at the time. His informant Diana Vaughan, who had supposedly witnessed many Satanic gatherings between Freemasons, was revealed to be Taxil's own fictitious creation.

On this day in 1743 was born one of the most admirable humans of the Enlightenment era, Thomas Jefferson. Among the tens of thousands of documents he left for us to study, apparently none of them indicate Jefferson having been a Freemason, despite his many Masonic connections and synonymous ideals. It can surely be said, though, that his actions spoke for themselves and have been revered by generations of masons.

Aside from his well-known contributions to the political developments between America, France, and England during the Revolution, this polymath was an architect, linguist, lawyer, inventor, gourmet, ornithologist, agriculturalist, founder of the American Philosophical Society and, to some, the Father of American Archaeology, having organized the first scientific excavation of a burial mound. These descriptors could not begin to reach the extent of this man's influence on human culture.

The Chinese philosopher Mencius (372-289 BC) over 2000 years ago wrote:

"The power of vision of Lî Lâu, and skill of hand of Kung-shû, without the compass and square, could not form squares and circles... When the sages had used the vigor of their eyes, they called in to their aid the compass, the square, the level, and the line, to make things square, round, level, and straight:-- the use of the instruments is inexhaustible...The compass and square produce perfect circles and squares. By the sages, the human relations are perfectly exhibited."

"In that time, through good geometry,
This honest craft of good masonry
Was ordained and made in this manner,
Counterfeited of these clerks together;
At these lord’s prayers they counterfeited geometry,
And gave it the name of masonry,
For the most honest craft of all.
