We had a great online support meeting Friday night, Sept. 11, and it was recorded! Three homeschooling mothers, including one who was homeschooled herself, shared their years of experience of homeschooling. They talked about how they do it, what curriculum they use, and how their kids have succeeded in college. This was encouragement for those of us still homeschooling, and great information for those just getting started.

To view the recording, email us at [email protected] for the link to the Google Drive file.

September's WHAM will be an online panel of experienced homeschool parents sharing their perspectives on homeschooling.
September 11, 7:00 PM Online
Email us at [email protected] for instructions on how to join us.

These families are experts because they've been homeschooling their own children for several years and no one could know more about their children than they do. Between them they have faced most of the challenges that any of us could face. They will be responding to questions such as: Why and how did you decide to homeschool? Explain your philosophy and style of home education. Describe a typical day at your home. How do you choose curriculum and find learning resources?

The parents on the panel will represent a variety of family styles and no attempt will be made to blend the opinions or arrive at a consensus. Home education is as unique as each family that does it. Homeschooling parents become their own experts. Our WHAMs are designed to facilitate the parents' education, growth, and discovery of what works best for their family.

AMTRAK TO SEATTLE MAR 26
All aboard for a day of fun in the big city! Amtrak has a group educational program called "Schools on Trains" that provides a very affordable opportunity to experience a train ride. The day will involve a 2.5 hour train ride to downtown Seattle (near Pioneer Square), 7 hours of free time to use any way we please, and another 2.5 hour ride on the train back to Bellingham.
"Schools on Trains" is for students ages 5-18 and their adult chaperones at a cost of only $17 each round trip. (Reservations for children under age 5 and adults traveling with them must be made with Amtrak at regular published fares. www.amtrak.com or 800-USA-RAIL. Due to capacity limits in each car, seating with the “Schools on Trains” group is not guaranteed.)
On the day of the trip check in with Gary McGill at the Bellingham train station (in Fairhaven, next to the ferry terminal) no later than 8:00 AM. Arriving in Seattle at 11:00, you will be on your own - visit the historical or art museums, experience the library, enjoy the aquarium, shop at the piers or downtown or the Pike Place Market, bus to Seattle Center, or whatever you want to do. Meet back at the Seattle train station at 6:00 PM for the return trip and arrive in Bellingham at 9:00. By the way, March 26 is opening day for the Seattle Mariners, game at 1:10pm (stadium is in walking distance from the Amtrak station).
DEADLINE to sign up: March 10
WHA members will have preference until February 10. After that we will open up reservations for all homeschool families. NOTE: the group must have more students than adults. Registrations with too many adults may be limited.
Sign up by sending names and ages (or “adult”) of travelers and payment ($17/person, checks payable to WHA) to WHA, Box 5747, Bellingham, WA 98227. Contact Gary McGill ([email protected] or 671-3689) to ask any questions you might have. Remember that children under 5 must have a full-fare adult accompanying them.

Field Trip: Fish Hatchery in downtown B’ham

March 20 12:00pm This Wednesday!
1600 C St. (Maritime Heritage Park, downtown Bellingham)

Bellingham Technical College (BTC) operates the fish hatchery formerly known as the Whatcom Creek Hatchery. We will meet in the lobby of the Perry Center (the only building around if you park in the C Street parking lot) for a tour of the hatchery operation, which includes the outside ponds (dress for the weather). We expect see juvenile Chinook and Chum salmon, as well as Pacific oysters, tilapia, and algae culturing.

This will be a field trip of interest to all ages, including our teens that might consider Fisheries & Aquaculture Science as a future career field.

We have lots of room right now, so your friends are welcome. But we are limited in how large our group can be, so sign up with Gary McGill ([email protected] or 671-3689).
