WWU Food Recovery Network

WWU Food Recovery Network In years prior, the WWU Food Recovery Network volunteers have been focused around collecting surplus food from retail locations on campus.

As one of over 200 Food Recovery Network chapters nationwide, we are students of Western Washington University who are dedicated to bettering our community and taking part in the fight to end food waste! Since the cutback in operations due the current pandemic, our volunteers have formed connections within the community and started working with Sustainable Connections to collect surplus food from

local businesses. The food is donated to organizations across Bellingham who support community members in need. This is an amazing opportunity to reduce food waste and feed those who need it most! To get in touch and find out how you can become involved, feel free to email us at [email protected]. We'd love to hear from you!

Food waste is contributing to climate change and food insecurity, and the pandemic amplified these problems. We want to reimagine the food chain; what if we can change the way food establishments operate so things don’t just go “back to normal” but instead go forward towards change? Join us as we hear from experts in food recovery across the country. Come with your questions, ideas, and be ready to participate in the conversation.

Hey everyone, we are looking for more people to join our group to divert food waste in Bellingham. Send us a message if you're interested in local sustainability and would like to contribute your time and energy to donating food to those in need during this cold winter. Commitments involve Sunday morning recoveries at the two Bellingham co-op locations which require reliable transportation and the ability to lift up to 30 pounds.

Happy Monday Everyone!

This Wednesday, November 18th, at 6pm Mark Peterson with Sustainable Connections will be giving a virtual presentation to the WWU Surfrider Club, and we would love for any interested FRN members to attend as well! Sustainable Connections is a local organization focused on the promotion of a thriving community through innovation, collaboration, and action. They work toward this mission through programs addressing issues such as zero waste, energy efficiency, smart growth, food accessibility, and thinking local. In his presentation, Mark plans to discuss these efforts, inform students on new projects underway, and address ways in which we can make an impact within our community. There will also be plenty of time for questions, so please feel free to check out the Sustainable Connections website if you’d like to explore further: https://sustainableconnections.org

Everyone is welcome to attend this virtual meeting, so please spread the word! And if you have any additional questions, don’t hesitate to reach out. Here is the Zoom login info:

We're excited to announce that as of today, we are officially a WWU club! Recoveries will still proceed as usual, but we're also hoping to meet once a quarter or so to talk about recruitment, structure, and to all get to meet each other :) We're hoping to have our first meeting soon, so if you would be interested in attending, please fill out this Doodle poll with *all* your available times. If none of these times work, let us know and we look into alternatives. 🙂
