At the Whatcom Community College 2021 Commencement Ceremony, Kaitlyn Ruttan was recognized as a recipient of the Early Childhood Education Discipline Outstanding Student award.

Katy is currently completing an internship with the YMCA doing emergency care for children in the Mt. Baker school district. This program was established in response to COVID-19 and like many of its kind, has been challenged to meet the diverse needs of children and families during this time. Katy has worked diligently 1:1 with students to ensure they continue to make progress. Those with whom she works report that Katy has been inspired to make classroom changes that have led to program improvements and have increased the success of students.

Katy also contracts with DDA to work as a personal care provider. Her goal is to work with students with special needs and to integrate her ASL skills into her work. She believes that teachers need to be aware that children have a unique culture and heritage in which they are immersed so their responses to classroom learning may vary. She feels that children learn best through curiosity, interest-driven activities, and an environment where it is safe to make mistakes.

The WCC Foundation offers Kaitlyn our warm congratulations, and best of luck in the future. For more information on additional honors and awards students at WCC, click here: https://www.whatcom.edu/student-services/admissions-registration/commencement-ceremony/honors-awards

Viktoria moved to the US from northern Germany (along the Baltic Sea), where she grew up and her family still resides. Viktoria is an avid reader – she especially enjoys the works of Brené Brown – and believes in regularly engaging in acts of resiliency, challenging herself to risk vulnerability by stepping outside of her comfort zone to help others. One of her most recent efforts is having been chosen to give this year’s student commencement speech. She has already been accepted at Western Washington University and is awaiting word from other schools before picking the next stop in her educational journey.

The WCC Foundation offers Viktoria our warm congratulations, and best of luck in the future. For more information on additional honors and awards students at WCC, click here: https://www.whatcom.edu/student-services/admissions-registration/commencement-ceremony/honors-awards

Ed worked this year as an engineering peer mentor supporting new students and helping to build community and connection among the engineering student population under the difficult remote learning circumstances of the pandemic. He is consistently one of the first to volunteer for additional peer mentor tasks and seems to intentionally push himself out of his comfort zone during peer mentor discussions/activities to grow as a professional.

At the Whatcom Community College 2021 Commencement Ceremony, Hope Jose-Day was recognized as a recipient of the Discipline Outstanding Student award.

Hope is a first generation student; her parents are from Mexico. She excelled in Anthropology, orchestrated class-wide Zoom meetings, and held meaningful discussions with peers throughout the quarter. For her final project, she explored a Mixteca indigenous corn species for her final project - one that could both be used in the face of climate change for drought stricken communities around the world. The project highlighted the deep cultural identity of the corn and the cultural importance of food more generally. She was also the ASB president of Ferndale HS while in Anthropology class.
