BELA is hosting a panel called, Education as a Site of Healing: A Dialogue on Abolitionist Teaching with Educators in our Community. Bellingham Public Schools has gone against community demands to remove police presence from our schools and in turn, has hired a new District Resource Officer in the midst of the pandemic. According to our sources, the DRO, Jeremiah Leland, has already been sent to student homes for disciplinary action. Please share widely. BELA would like to express our gratitude to the 70 individuals who participated in our Community Call to Action this past Monday-Wednesday. After looking at the excel spread sheet notes, there were over 115 calls made! Our fight isn't over as we will continue to reach out to those in leadership roles and demand Police Free Schools for our youth! Stay tuned for the release dates of our next Community Call, along with story updates detailing the experiences some participants encountered with the District's Board Members. Remember this petition we launched in June before we even had a name? It now has nearly 3,600 signatures! Imagine if every person who signed this petition called our Superintendent and School Board during our community call. The power in numbers is real, y’all!
