Plant Pick of the Week: Cosmos 🌸

Yes , theres still time to grow flowers from seed in the Pacific Northwest!

Cosmos are popular, easy to direct sow in late spring and reward gardeners with airy foliage, nonstop summer blooms, and plenty of pollinator visits. This annual thrives in sunny spots and actually performs better without rich soil or too much fuss.

Sometimes the happiest flowers are the ones that don’t demand perfection.

Have you grown cosmos before?

🌿 Poetry & Petals Sunday 🌿

Morning rain lingers,
Roots drink deeply in silence,
Summer waits nearby.

What signs of the changing season are you noticing in your garden?

🌿 Plant Pick of the Week: Clematis

One of our recent volunteers from Rainier Athletes snapped a photo in the garden and asked, “What flower IS this?”

A few minutes later they informed us it might now be their favorite flower, which honestly happens to a lot of gardeners once clematis enters the conversation. 😊

Clematis are sometimes called the “queen of the vines,” and it’s easy to see why. Their dramatic blooms can stop people right in their tracks, especially when they suddenly appear winding through a trellis or climbing up through a garden bed like floral fireworks.

This beauty is blooming right now at Bellevue Demonstration Garden, and it’s a wonderful reminder that gardens are full of discovery, whether you’ve been gardening for 30 years or just picked up your first shovel last week.

Master Gardener tip: Most clematis like their “heads in the sun and feet in the shade,” meaning the vines enjoy sunshine while the roots prefer cooler soil and mulch protection.

And yes… many gardeners end up with more than one clematis. They have a way of following you home. 🌸

Thank you Tati Villegas for the picture

🌿 Compost Corner: It takes a village… and a lot of wheelbarrows.

Gardening isn’t just flowers and pretty photos.
Sometimes it’s shovels, compost, sore muscles, and a whole lot of teamwork.

A huge thank you to the amazing students and mentor from Rainier Athletes who volunteered at Bellevue Demonstration Garden this week. They jumped right in, helping move and spread a very large compost delivery through the garden beds, no small task!

Along the way they also toured the garden, helped with watering, and learned a little about the behind-the-scenes work that keeps a public garden growing.

Volunteer days like this matter more than people realize. Public gardens thrive because people of all ages are willing to show up, get dirty, learn something new, and help build community together.

We’re so grateful for your energy, kindness, and hard work. You made a BIG difference. 💚

🌿✂️ Tool Tip Tuesday: Sharp Tools = Healthier Plants ✂️🌿

A dull blade doesn’t just make gardening harder on you, it’s harder on your plants too.
Clean, sharp pruners make smoother cuts that heal faster, reduce stress on the plant, and help lower the chance of spreading disease through torn stems and ragged wounds.

A few quick habits make a big difference: ✔️ Wipe blades with alcohol between plants
✔️ Remove sap and debris after use
✔️ Keep blades sharp
✔️ Lightly oil tools to help prevent rust
💡 Especially important when pruning tomatoes, herbs, roses, and any stressed or disease-prone plants.

And if your pruners currently “chew” branches instead of cutting them… we’ve got you covered. 😅

🌿 Join us this Saturday, May 30, for our free Garden Tool Sharpening workshop at Bellevue Demonstration Garden!
