At HERO House NW, belonging is built through meaningful work. đź’š

Every day, members and staff work side by side—running the café, preparing meals, welcoming visitors, managing projects, and contributing their talents to the Clubhouse community.

These everyday moments build confidence, connection, purpose, and hope. Because at Clubhouse, everyone has something meaningful to contribute—and everyone has a place to belong.

Our CEO, Dr. Kailey Fiedler-Gohlke, has been part of the effort to transform Washington’s behavioral health system and strengthen crisis response for people living with mental illness.

A recent Seattle Times story examines the promise of that work, the barriers that have slowed progress, and the urgent need to turn policy commitments into accessible, community-based care.

At HERO House NW, we remain committed to ensuring people living with serious mental illness receive compassionate support, meaningful opportunities, and the dignity they deserve.

Read the story: https://www.seattletimes.com/seattle-news/mental-health/how-a-washington-behavioral-health-plan-fizzled/

A state committee met for nearly two years to develop a report on Washington’s behavioral health system. The report seems to have sat on the shelf ever since.

What is a day at the Clubhouse really like?

Liz puts it beautifully:

“The Clubhouse wakes my heart up and makes me want to work hard. All of the sudden life has value and meaning. The Clubhouse inspires you and makes you feel important. You get a supportive community where your friends want you to grow and you will always know you are missed.”

— Liz Smith, HERO House Everett Member

At HERO House NW, a day isn’t just about having somewhere to go. It’s about purpose, connection, meaningful work, friendship, and belonging.

It’s a place where people are encouraged to discover their strengths, contribute to their community, and grow alongside people who genuinely care about them.

This is what a day at the Clubhouse can look like:
đź’š Meaningful work
đź’™ Supportive friendships
đź’š A sense of purpose
đź’™ Opportunities to grow
đź’š A community where you matter

Everyone has a place here.

What exactly is a Clubhouse?

It’s more than a program. It’s a community where people living with mental illness can build relationships, contribute their talents, strengthen everyday skills, and work toward goals that matter to them.

At a Clubhouse, participation is voluntary. Members and staff work side-by-side in meaningful roles—from culinary services and reception to outreach and clerical work—creating structure, connection, confidence, and purpose.

And donor support makes this community possible. đź’š

When you support HERO House NW, you help create spaces where people can reconnect, contribute, and thrive.

Belonging. Purpose. Opportunity. Community. That’s Clubhouse.

Mental health recovery happens in community—and community requires investment.

HERO House NW is deeply grateful to King County Councilmember Reagan Dunn for championing funding that supports Clubhouse programs and the thousands of people across King County who are working toward recovery, connection, and purpose.

We are also incredibly thankful for City of Bellevue, Washington - Government’s Councilmember Lynne Robinson and Mayor Mo Malakoutian for their continued support.

At a time when mental health needs continue to grow, funding for community-based recovery services is more important than ever. Clubhouses provide more than support—they create opportunities for employment, education, leadership, and belonging. They help people move from isolation to connection and from surviving to thriving.

Public investments in programs like HERO House NW are investments in stronger communities, better health outcomes, and a future where people living with mental health challenges have access to the resources and relationships they need to succeed.

We thank Councilmember Dunn for recognizing the value of this work and for being a committed partner in advancing recovery-focused mental health services. Together, we can continue building a King County where everyone has the opportunity to contribute, connect, and thrive.
