Climate risks are financial risks. In light of the recent upheavals in the banking sector and the greater concentration of deposits in the large Wall Street banks, now more than ever we need to demand that these banks use their power and funds responsibly. The banks must manage both financial risks and climate risks. We need banks to invest safely, securely, and sustainably to have a safe planet.

There are over 100 events in over half the U.S. states in which thousands of activists will be on the streets protesting the billions of dollars of financing banks provide to the fossil fuel industry.

Focus: Forests, Forestry, and Climate
Western Washington’s forests store a substantial amount of carbon. It’s stored in trees, in shrubs and plants in the understory, and in the soil. With such great carbon storage potential, ensuring continued forest health and resiliency, through preservation and management, should be considered among the highest priorities in efforts to reduce the impacts of climate change. We will be learning about the characteristics of a healthy forest and some of the policies that impact what happens to our forests in the future.

Guest Speakers: Ben Hagedorn, Michael Ross – Snoqualmie Tribe, and Victoria Wingell - Oregon Wild.

Ben has a master’s degree in environmental studies, focused primarily on how climate change and variability influence spatial patterns of forest growth over time. He will explain some factors that contribute to forest health and how to recognize a healthy forest.

Michael Ross will be highlighting the cultural and traditional connection with forests and talking about how Indigenous People care for forests through management and stewardship

Victoria works as a Forests and Climate Campaigner for Oregon Wild. She will speak about policies that people can pursue and actions they can take to help forests sequester more carbon. Victoria will be going into depth on the opportunities and obstacles faced by supporters, and what grassroots engagement can mean moving forward.

The last few weeks alone – from acts of violence in our schools and grocery stores, heightened calls for war, extreme weather events, the ongoing pandemic, and another round of election without the full protections of the Voting Rights Act – have reminded us of the interlocking nature of the challenges we face today and the need to embolden our agitation at the ballot box, the courts, the legislatures and in the streets.

Our communities are suffocating under the weight of systemic racism, poverty, ecological devastation and the denial of healthcare, the war economy, and a distorted moral narrative that tells us that in the richest country in the world there is not enough to go around. And at the center of these interlocking injustices are 140 million people who are poor or one emergency away from economic ruin. As long as America ignores the needs of these many millions, we all live in an impoverished democracy.

Interlocking crises demand an intersectional response and on June 18 thousands upon thousands will do exactly that. Poor and low-wealth people will stand shoulder to shoulder with all justice loving people to make the country hear and see their pain. Together, we will lift up a moral call to heal and transform our nation from the bottom up.
