Nurse Practitioner Dr. Scharmaine Baker has been sentenced to 87 months in federal prison.

After a three-day trial in July 2025, a federal jury in the Eastern District of Louisiana found her guilty of six counts of health care fraud. According to the U.S. Department of Justice, Baker signed hundreds of orders for medically unnecessary cancer genetic tests, resulting in over $12.1 million in false claims to Medicare. She was also ordered to serve three years of supervised release and pay $1,508,868.25 in restitution.

The DOJ reported that Baker's actions included ordering ovarian and cervical cancer tests for male patients and failing to review test results, even when they flagged cancer-associated variants. A telehealth company operator recorded telling Baker she would be "rolling in money" for signing the orders, to which she replied, "Honey, I am not complaining."

What do you think about the impact of such cases on the healthcare system?

🚨 UPDATE: In a development that has stunned the healthcare community, the individual accused in the tragic passing of Tuscaloosa nurse Ada Doss is now suing the very hospital where she worked.

The Background: On May 12th, 2026, 27-year-old nurse Ada Dossβ€”a wife and mother of twoβ€”unthinkingly lost her life during an attempted theft as she walked to her car at the end of her shift at DCH Regional Medical Center. The individual involved was detained at the scene and faces the most severe criminal charges.

The Update: A newly filed lawsuit claims this individual was experiencing a severe psychiatric crisis that day and that hospital staff turned him away without a medical screening just hours prior to the incident.

The Response: DCH Regional Medical Center is firmly fighting back against the suit. The hospital released a statement flatly denying the claims, stating that he never entered the emergency department, never registered as a patient, and never presented himself for care that day.

Nearly 4,000 nurses at Brigham and Women's Hospital in Boston voted 99.6% for a strike.

The vote, 2,798 to 12, marks the largest nurse strike authorization in Massachusetts history.

Key issues include wages, rising health insurance costs, and staffing.

What does this mean for patient care if a strike happens?

Nereida 'Nedi' Benitez, an emergency room nurse with Sharp HealthCare in San Diego, died June 11 after stopping to help at a crash scene on Interstate 15 near SR-76.

She had just finished an overnight shift and was driving home to Temecula when she pulled over. She never made it home.

Benitez and a second good Samaritan, 54-year-old Marine veteran Chad Tillman, were both struck and killed while assisting at the scene. A 21-year-old driver has been booked on suspicion of felony DUI and gross vehicular manslaughter. Those charges are allegations that have not been proven in court.

Colleagues remember Benitez as a shining light. She started her career nearly a year into the pandemic, spent two years in COVID units, and had recently secured an Air Force enlistment as a step toward her dream of becoming a flight nurse.

A visitation is planned for June 18 in Murrieta.

The instinct that made her a beloved ER nurse is the same instinct that put her on the side of I-15 at 4 a.m. That wiring doesn't switch off at the end of a shift.

How do we honor that instinct while keeping nurses safe at roadside scenes?
