The Lakota medicine men were much more than shamans and healers. They were also the humorous men who brought culture and joy to their tribe. These men were also named HeyรณkศŸa. They preferred to do everything backwards, including riding horses backwards, or wearing their clothes inside out.
The purpose of these men was to make the people of the tribe question things, knowing that things were done one way, but could be done another. They worked to remove hate and fears from their people.

Our new stamp honors Chief Standing Bear of the Ponca Tribe. In 1879, he won a landmark court ruling that determined a Native American was a person under the law. His efforts also contributed to regaining the land in Nebraska that he and his tribe members were forcibly removed from in 1877. Honor his legacy and Native American history by pre-ordering the Chief Standing Bear stamps today!

The Washington Commanders are being sued by The Native American Guardians Association, which has been trying to get the Commanders to change the name back to Redskins.
The lawsuit states:
โ€œThe logo on the Redskinโ€™s helmet is an actual person, itโ€™s Chief White Calf. Every time they go out on that field, they were honoring Chief White Calf and they were battling on the football field with the same honor and integrity and courage. They should continue to honor that.โ€

Cherokee Women and Their Important Roles:
Women in the Cherokee society were equal to men. They could earn the title of War Women and sit in councils as equals. This privilege led an Irishman named Adair who traded with the Cherokee from 1736-1743 to accuse the Cherokee of having a "petticoat government".
Clan kinship followed the mother's side of the family. The children grew up in the mother's house, and it was the duty of an uncle on the mother's side to teach the boys how to hunt, fish, and perform certain tribal duties. The women owned the houses and their furnishings. Marriages were carefully negotiated, but if a woman decided to divorce her spouse, she simply placed his belongings outside the house. Cherokee women also worked hard. They cared for the children, cooked, tended the house, tanned skins, wove baskets, and cultivated the fields. Men helped with some household chores like sewing, but they spent most of their time hunting.
Cherokee girls learned by example how to be warriors and healers. They learned to weave baskets, tell stories, trade, and dance. They became mothers and wives, and learned their heritage.
