The “Science of Reading”: What About Our Early Advanced Readers? with Dr. Nancy Young & fellow educators

Due to low literacy rates, changes to reading instruction described as the “science of reading” or “structured literacy” are rapidly being mandated in many states/districts/schools, accompanied by lengthy professional development for educators. Yet rarely acknowledged are the different needs of students who begin kindergarten already reading or students who progress more rapidly than typical once in the school setting. During this webinar, Dr. Nancy Young will provide an overview of the terms and features within her translational framework The Ladder of Reading & Writing© (2023), particularly in the context of students K-3 who are advanced in reading (AIR). This will include her summarizing the relationship between genetics and early reading, contrasting explicit instruction with implicit/statistical learning, and briefly explaining how the literacy needs of AIR students can be addressed through “acceleration” or “extended learning”. Two WA educators and reading specialists, Maria Morris and Christi Corbin, will then share with webinar attendees their respective journeys to becoming aware of, and more appropriately addressing the learning needs of, advanced readers in their school.
