HB 1295 is now signed into law —an important win for literacy in Washington.

This bill raises the bar by setting clearer standards for reading curriculum and strengthening teacher preparation in structured literacy—making sure instruction is aligned with what we know works to help all students become strong readers.

Huge thanks to Representative Gerry Pollet for sponsoring the bill, and to Sara Buetow (Decoding Dyslexia Washington) for the leadership and persistence to get this across the finish line.

Appreciation as well to our local legislators:
• 48th District — Senator Vandana Slatter, Representatives Osman Salahuddin and Amy Walen
• 41st District — Senator Lisa Wellman, Representatives My-Linh Thai and Janice Zahn
And thank you to Governor Bob Ferguson for signing it into law.

Also grateful to the organizations that helped drive this effort—the Washington Branch of the International Dyslexia Association, Read Washington, The Reading League Washington, the Reading Equity Project, and WA State PTA.

And a special shoutout to Kristi Schwesigner and Ava for testifying and keeping this issue front and center in Bellevue.

A meaningful step forward—and more work ahead to ensure every student becomes a confident, capable reader.

URGENT ACTION NEEDED!!
There’s still time until 8am tomorrow (Fri 1/30) to submit PRO written testimony for HB 1295 - Advancing Early Literacy in Washington Schools!

It doesn’t need to be long, but please share your stories! Please support HB 1295 sponsored by Washington state Representative Gerry Pollet, a tireless advocate for our students with first hand experience as a parent of a Dyslexic child. (Now adult.)

Also, the BEST thing to do is send a quick email to the House Education committee with your stories about why structured literacy is needed to support ALL students! I'll include the emails to copy/paste in the comments below.

Literacy is an equity issue.
And HB 1295 is our chance to fix what isn’t working.
More than 40% of WA students read below grade level — not because of student failure, but because access to evidence-based instruction is inconsistent.

HB 1295 Public Hearing:
Thursday, January 29 | 8:00 AM
House Education Committee | Olympia, WA

This bill:
- Brings evidence-based literacy to every classroom
- Supports dyslexic & struggling readers
- Trains and guides our educators

FREE Virtual Dyslexia Simulation ONLINE: March 25, 2024
Monday, March 25th
4:00-5:30 PM with 30 min. Q&A session

Learning the relationship between written symbols (letters) and sounds (phonemes) does not come easily to everyone. Dyslexia affects 20% of the population and is the most common of all neuro-cognitive disorders. The nationwide push for early screenings for dyslexia and access to structured literacy interventions is a step in the right direction. However, many parents and educators don’t understand the impact of comments like “You can read this, it’s easy” or “We just went over this sight word, don’t you remember?”. This eye-opening virtual dyslexia simulation will shed light on the difficulties a struggling reader faces. By experiencing the struggle, we can better understand and advocate for our children & students.
