Hey everyone, hope you and your families are safe and doing well in the midst of this COVID-19 pandemic. During this time, we’ve received a mix of information — some good and some not so good — on the effects this pandemic will have on us individually and as a collective. Lately, we have been getting information on the health of the African-American community, and to our shock, the numbers are staggering when it comes to the death rate of African Americans to this novel virus.
The situation is a prime example of the historic barriers within the black community. We can see how lack of health insurance, food/housing inequality, poverty, unemployment, and resource availability affects how our people are being impacted by the coronavirus. It goes to show where our lives continue to stand in the system.
With the government shutting businesses down, especially those deemed as ‘non-essential’, black families across the country are desperate to work despite the at-risk conditions , in evidently causing the likelihood of catching the virus to increase.
Through these troubling times, it’s important to stay well-informed on the countries health status, but also with our own community. We URGE you read the articles that we’ve posted in the comments, as it’s important to stay aware and make sure these issues don’t get ignored. Please stay safe, healthy, and continue to social distance. We got this! 🙂
