Check out this Neal Patterson Story and his impact on the World Cup in Kansas City!

Congratulations, Kansas City, and thank you, Neal!

As the World Cup spotlight shines on Kansas City, we keep thinking about how much our late founder, Neal Patterson, would have loved seeing his vision of Kansas City as the Soccer Capital of America become a reality.

Twenty years ago, Neal and his business partner, Cliff Illig, were approached by a passionate local group working to save Kansas City’s struggling professional soccer franchise. They purchased the team and immediately began laying the foundation for a world-class soccer city.

From the earliest moments, bringing the World Cup to Kansas City was part of that vision.

In 2009, Neal co-chaired Kansas City’s first World Cup bid effort, working alongside Clark Hunt and Cliff. Under Neal and Cliff’s leadership, Sporting Club invested in permanent infrastructure across the city, including Sporting Park, Swope Soccer Village, No Other Pub, and the Compass Minerals National Performance Center.

These investments in infrastructure, youth development, and unique soccer experiences helped transform Kansas City into a true soccer destination—and, ultimately, helped the smallest of the 2026 World Cup Host Cities earn its place on the sport’s biggest stage.

From KC’s selection by four nations as a base camp to Lionel Messi’s glorious hat trick at Arrowhead, Kansas City is showing the world that magic can come from unexpected places.

Thank you, Neal, for the vision that laid the foundation for the Kansas City World Cup—and for the memories of a lifetime!
