Thanks for the many poinsettia donations! The first wave of plants and soil were incorporated into a bed and raised the soil level about an inch! Chopping those plants up made room for a carload of 25 more plants from a local church, which will raise the soil level even more. (We arranged them for a fun, temporary display of red until the cold does them in.) If your church, office, home, etc. decorates with potted plants, at the end of their season please consider offering them to a local gardener or add them to your own compost.

A big part of what we do is to try and show you can have a beautiful garden and support insects all at the same time. Planting natives, not spraying, all help our tiny friends. It's important!

Poinsettias can add beauty and life to holiday decorating, but if yours have lost their beauty why not give them a second life in the Heart Garden? Please place unwanted house plants (poinsettias or otherwise) in one of the new raised beds. Leave the soil and plant and we will incorporate your donation into the soil this spring.

Poinsettias are interesting plants. Their yellow flowers are quite small but the colorful (most commonly red) foliage is what make it so desirable. The plant typically produces green leaves during the long days of summer. However, as days shorten and there is less sunlight, poinsettias begin producing the colorful leaves that have made the plant so popular around the holidays.

In the fall, many neighbors recycled their Halloween pumpkins in the compost bins here at the Heart Garden, and we couldn't be happier! After the holidays, if you're looking for an earth-friendly way to recycle unwanted live poinsettias, why not add them - plant and soil - to a raised bed? Buying soil to fill a raised bed is expensive so you will be helping in several ways.

Raised beds are in the back, near the greenhouse.
