đź’Ą Why 4-H exists....

It All started in around 1900, farmers resisted new Scientific methods from university researchers. Educators formed Youth clubs instead, finding kids were willing to learn these, back then called modern practices and bring them home to eventually out Produce their parents.

It Evolved over each decade to be what is the greatest educational Experience a kids can be involved in, But why Hire judges?

Each category, has a judge whom is (supposed to be) knowledgeable in that area. The judges are to judge on quality, Consistency, utility among many other traits. There are " Standard's " for each Project area. I'm in the Poultry area so I can explain it better than other areas.

The two chickens in the picture are the same breed & age, Silver laced wyandotte Large Fowl. The top one is " Commercial bred ", what you'd buy at the farm store or order from a Hatchery. Not ideal for showing, very small, no meat, not balanced.... The bottom is a Standard bred Bird exhibiting good Body conformation, muscling, needs color work in saddle area but overall is a fairly balanced bird. One conforms to the standard and one does not, one is a Purple ribbon and one is a Red or maybe lower.

When judging Poultry, we are judging for Conformation, market readiness, and Soundness all of which are led by the " Poultry standard of perfection ". Standards were originally set up to achieve a uniform product on the shelves of the grocery store while also maintaining a beautiful animal in the process. Just like you want quality ingredients for your Baking project or a good Club calf for the Beef project you also want to locate a breeder for the poultry project.

Hey there everyone, you made it to the day you all have been waiting for. I am so proud of you as as you have stepped up your animal care !!!! Attached you will find the sale order for tomorrow. Market chicken kids be ready to head to the show arena at noon as there are only 6 Dairy steers. With the exception of grand and reserve you will take 1 chicken to the far end of the Show Barn (opposite end where you went in for the show).
Buyers may be walking through the barns in the morning prior to sale. So clean pens with clean birds in them well watered and fed, allows buyers to see you care! You may want to wash your birds or at least the one u take into the sale. Wear your show attire, no hats. And Smile!
Market Turkey kids. With where you are in the sale order you should be ready to roll around 1. Clean your birds make them perty, same as what I mentioned to the chicken kids. SMILE!

Good afternoon Poultry peeps.
1. Pens cleaned by 10am, means bedding completely changed! Especially 3 days in. There are tools in the black cabinet at the front of the chicken barn that you can use and put away when finished. Ammonia starts to build up in the pens and is not healthy. Feed and water
Be sure to put plenty of shavings in your pens.
2. Exhibition pens are not as much of a problem. In other words MOST of you are doing great
3. Market Turkeys need completely cleaned mid week, if you have been taking out p**p areas in the past couple of days. Keep the bedding fluffed for comfort. We have in the past had pens that get so saturated and beat down that we have unwanted nasty at move out. There are rakes, hoes and shovels in the chicken barn for your use.

To summarize!!
The committee has been watering which is ok, but if and when you come in to check if you have a waterer that is 1/2 full fill it up.

Last night when we went through the barn I used 3 gallons to fill. At noon today we used another 3 gallons, that means when you may be checking things are full, but it is not because your birds are not drinking it is because we beat you to it. Let's get on it. I did post on Facebook yesterday for everyone to help out but I feel I missed people there, so will try this way. Thank you.
