25 May 2026 - Memorial Day

Memorial Day is coming soon. If the weather forecast is sunny and low humidity, Post 3312 VFW raises Funeral Honor flags donated by families all around Pine Slope Cemetery.

These flags once draped the coffin or accompanied the cremains of a departed service member.

If you would like to be a part of this community event your assistance is appreciated. Raising and lowering 140 flags goes quickly with many volunteers.

5:45 am: Meet at the Pine Slope main entrance;
6:00 am: Flags go up
9:00 am: Memorial Day Program at Pine Slope Cemetery Memorial Hill or inside the inclement weather building just past Memorial Hill if it's raining
1:30 pm: Meet at the Pine Slope main entrance
(We will conduct a review of proper folding of the U.S. Flag)
2:00 pm: Flags are recovered and returned to the storage boxes
3:00 pm: Taps Across America (no presentations and no programs, just buglers/trumpeters playing Taps from the Memorial Hill) Taps can be heard throughout the cemetery.

NOTE: If it is raining, foggy, high humidity or no sunshine at all that day, the cotton flags will not be raised. There isn't enough dry clothesline in the town to hang dry 140 large cotton flags.

For more information on Veterans Memorial Avenue of Flags, or if you wish to donate a Funeral Honors flag to be flown, you may FB Message VFW Post 3312 or Wm. Blaine Anderson.

Good monday morning, I have decided to once a month start up a remembering heroes post. I will post a picture and something about a fallen brother or sister from our Armed Forces from Butte County. So with that being said this month's remembering heroes goes to Austin Post .

Austin lived a life devoted to service – to his country, his community and his family.

Born in Rodman, Iowa in 1931 to Guy and Mabel Post (Sloan), he moved to Newell, South Dakota with his family at a young age. After graduating from Newell High School in 1949, Austin joined the U.S. Navy. He served two tours of duty aboard the destroyer USS Rupertus as a fire control technician during the Korean War. In 1953, Austin returned to Newell and took a job as a postal clerk at the Newell Post office. He was named Postmaster in 1977 and served in that position until his retirement in 1992 at age 61. His 39 years of service was marked by a large community celebration. Oct. 3, 1992 was declared “Austin Post Day” in South Dakota in his honor. Retirement didn’t last long for Austin. To keep busy, he worked at Newell’s grocery store, at the Newell golf course and finally as a bus driver for the Newell School District for nearly 20 years. Austin married Donna in 1965. The couple spent many years in their beloved Newell, raising a family, enjoying time with friends, serving side-by-side in the community and enjoying many rounds of golf and walks around Newell. The couple moved to Belle Fourche in 2018 and celebrated their 57th wedding anniversary on July 10th, shortly before Austin’s passing.

As the new year starts off, we changed up our honor guard or should I say we added new covers to the program. Not to flashy but will not only help with the sun , they keep with the traditions of the western South Dakota heritage. Thanks to our sponsors for donating the funds to get these beautiful cowboy hats.

VFW Post 3312 supported the Belle Fourche Rec Center's Halloween Spooktacular where we met wonderful goblins and even celebrities, and handed out treats in a safe and warm environment.

It was also nice to chat with the Veterans escorting their goblins as the passed through the labyrinth of tables of goodies.
