Woodlands Conservancy

Woodlands Conservancy Woodlands Conservancy is a nonprofit land trust organized in 2001 to preserve and restore ecologically significant lands in Louisiana.

Woodlands Conservancy preserves and restores critical forested wetlands that protect our community and provide habitat for wildlife and migratory birds. The 630-acre Woodlands Trail contains over 10 miles of natural trails for hiking, birdwatching, photography and other non-motorized activities. The trail system meanders along a spill-bank that provides scenic views of wetland areas and leads to a grouping of World War II Ammunition Magazines.

During this month’s bird banding at Woodlands Preserve, we were visited by the most colorful songbird in North America, the painted bunting! We were lucky enough to get to band three, gorgeous adult males, along with a few Northern cardinals and Carolina wrens.

This brightly colored songbird (this includes females and juveniles— who are bright green!), is fairly common in the coastal Southeast and south-central US where they breed. They spend their winters in the Caribbean, Mexico and central America. Their diet consists largely of seeds, particularly once breeding season is over. For this reason, painted buntings can be seen visiting backyard bird feeders, especially if there is low, dense vegetation nearby. The males’ song is a sweet, rambling call that, once learned, is easily identified.

Have you seen or heard painted buntings at Woodlands Preserve?

Let’s work!

If you are taking the Upland Trail this week and next, please pardon our progress! This week, construction begins on our new bird banding pavilion! This dual-use structure will help our bird banding operations run more smoothly, safely and comfortably as there will be abundant seating and, most importantly for these hot summer months, shade!

When not in use for bird banding, it also will double as a great picnic spot! 😎🧺 Shoutout to Chevron Oronite for generously donating materials for this project ♥️🦅

Stay tuned for updates!

Happy World Otter Day!

On this day, we want to celebrate the North American river otter (Lontra Canadensis), an adaptable, semi-aquatic carnivore whose range extends throughout much of North America. These clever animals are members of the family Mustelidae (like weasels, mink, badgers and others) and thrive in Louisiana’s coastal marshes, swamps and bayous. With adults weighing in at 10-33 pounds, their long, muscular, streamlined bodies allow them to swim at speeds of up to 8 miles per hour and dive to 36 feet or more. They are primarily nocturnal and crepuscular (active at dawn and dusk) and feed on mostly aquatic organisms, including fish, crawfish, frogs, turtles, insects and small mammals.

Their home range can be as large as 30 square miles, although a typical river otter territory is 3-15 square miles. They tend to live alone or in pairs, but will often socialize in groups known for their playful behavioral displays. These play activities strengthen social bonds and even improve their hunting skills.

While they may come into conflict with humans sometimes (such as over our mutually cherished crawfish ponds), river otters are essential, top predators in the aquatic ecosystems they inhabit, helping control the populations of species that they prey on. They have inhabited this region for thousands of years and their presence is vital in maintaining the health, biodiversity and long-term stability of wetland ecosystems like Woodlands Preserve. For that reason, we are happy anytime we get to glimpse a river otter utilizing the habitat that we protect!

Thank you to all of our donors for their generous support on GiveNOLA Day!

With your help, we were able to raise $8,084 to support our mission to preserve and restore Louisiana’s precious forested wetlands—ensuring they thrive for generations to come.

Every dollar you’ve given helps us restore and protect 840 acres of vital wetlands and maintain 11 miles of scenic hiking trails—spaces where wildlife flourishes, communities connect with nature, and future generations can experience the beauty of our natural heritage.

Together, we are not just preserving land; we are securing a future. Because when we protect the land, we leave a legacy for generations to come.
