Strong literacy instruction doesn’t stop in elementary school—and neither does the need for educator support.

Recently, a group of middle school educators from Spring Branch ISD participated in our Structured Reading and Spelling (SRS) course. Designed specifically for educators working with middle school, high school, and adult learners who need intensive foundational literacy support, this training equips participants with research-based strategies to help students build critical reading and writing skills.

From decoding and word attack to morphology, comprehension, and composition, these educators strengthened their knowledge of structured literacy instruction and learned practical ways to monitor progress and meet students where they are.

We are grateful for our continued partnership with Spring Branch ISD and look forward to seeing the impact these educators make in their classrooms this fall as they help more students become confident, independent readers and writers.

Yesterday, Neuhaus Education Center welcomed nearly 50 leaders from school districts, charter networks, and nonprofit organizations for our first Literacy Leadership Convening, generously funded by The Powell Foundation.

Through a dyslexia simulation and interactive panel discussions featuring expert practitioners, elected officials, and policy leaders, participants explored both the opportunities and challenges facing literacy in the Houston region.

The conversations sparked new connections, valuable perspectives, and important ideas that will help shape Neuhaus' future contributions to advancing literacy in our community. Most importantly, the insights gathered will inform our understanding of Houston's literacy landscape and strengthen our collective efforts to ensure every child has the opportunity to become a successful reader.

This is just the beginning. We look forward to sharing key learnings and next steps in the months ahead.

When Matt attended a Neuhaus Parent Pulse session earlier this year, he was looking for simple ways to help his young son stay engaged with reading at home. What he found were practical ideas he could use during everyday moments — singing songs in the car, playing rhyming games while cooking dinner, and turning bedtime stories into conversations about sounds and words. 💙

Now, as summer approaches, Matt says he feels more confident helping build his child’s literacy skills in ways that feel natural and fun.

Our upcoming Parent Pulse: Early Literacy at Home session will continue sharing easy, meaningful strategies families can use to nurture phonological awareness, vocabulary, and a love of language through play and daily routines.

Celebrating perseverance, growth, and new beginnings! 🎓✨

This semester, the Adult Literacy Program at Neuhaus Education Center proudly celebrated 12 graduates - including 9 adult learners and 3 young adult students through a partnership with AAMA's George I. Sanchez Charter School. Surrounded by families, friends, guests, and Neuhaus staff, nearly 100 people gathered last week both in person and online to honor these incredible accomplishments.

Graduating from the Adult Literacy Program represents more than completing coursework. Each graduate demonstrated dedication through consistent participation, improved reading skills, and a commitment to achieving personal goals. Their accomplishments include pursuing college opportunities, earning certifications, supporting children with dyslexia, gaining greater independence with reading and writing tasks at work, and building confidence to pursue future dreams.

We were honored to welcome special guest speaker SaulPaul, whose interactive presentation, music, and inspiring personal story encouraged graduates and guests alike to continue believing in their potential. From foster care to becoming a GRAMMY-nominated artist, entrepreneur, and founder of Skill Builders Career Academy, SaulPaul’s message of resilience and empowerment deeply resonated with everyone in attendance.

Thank you to our students, families, staff, supporters, and community partners for making this celebration so meaningful. Congratulations to our graduates — your hard work and determination inspire us all! 💙

Jonathan didn’t expect a grammar course to change the way he saw his teaching—but it did.

As a former math teacher, he walked into Neuhaus' 𝘔𝘶𝘭𝘵𝘪𝘴𝘦𝘯𝘴𝘰𝘳𝘺 𝘎𝘳𝘢𝘮𝘮𝘢𝘳 course hoping to better support his students in language and writing. What he found was something more: practical, hands-on strategies that made grammar click.

💭 “This session was very well organized. I learned practical ways to introduce and reinforce parts of speech in both visual and tactile ways. I also learned ways to translate this learning to help students with expanding their overall writing to be more robust and expressive. As a former math teacher, this course made me feel more confident in my ability to support students in their language and writing journey.”
