Houston Haitians United was honored to be represented by members of our Board of Directors at Slavery Remembrance Sunday, hosted by The Community of Faith Church.

Board members Jean Michel Celestin, and Richard Alexandre joined members of Houston’s African Diaspora and community leaders for a powerful morning of remembrance, reflection, faith, and unity.

As Haitians—the descendants of men and women who fought against slavery and established the world’s first independent Black republic—we recognize the importance of remembering the sacrifices of those who came before us and standing in solidarity with the broader African Diaspora.

“Harder the Fight… Greater Our Faith!”

We thank Bishop James Dixon II and The Community of Faith Church for bringing our community together for this meaningful commemoration, and we congratulate Congressman Al Green on receiving the Abolitionist Award.

Houston Haitians United extends our sincere thanks to everyone who stood with us and participated in our press conference, “A Call for Solidarity, Solutions & Safety.” Your presence reinforced the importance of standing together, identifying real solutions, and protecting our Haitian and immigrant communities.

We are especially grateful to Congressman Al Green; Johnny Mata, Greater Houston Coalition for Justice; Bishop James Dixon, Houston NAACP; Judson Robinson, Houston Area Urban League; Aura Espinosa, FIEL, and Sledge Leonidas, HCPA, for lending their voices, leadership, and support.

We also extend our appreciation to Black Alliance for Just Immigration (BAJI); The Texas Black Migrant Ecosystem (TBME); Houston Caribbean Professionals Association HCPA; Harris County Commissioner’s Office staff; Houston Liberation Center; Houston DSA for providing audio equipment; City of Houston staff members; and all of the community organizations, advocates, allies, and supporters who joined us.

Finally, thank you to the members of the press who showed up to listen, ask questions, and help ensure the concerns of our community are heard.

This moment was about more than a press conference. It was about SOLIDARITY. SOLUTIONS. SAFETY. And we will continue working together to protect our community and advocate for TPS.

First-gen grad. Industrial Engineer. Proof of what community support can do. 💛

She earned her B.S. in Industrial Engineering & Operations Analytics (minor in Engineering Management) from the University of Arkansas, and today she’s a Manufacturing Engineer with Cummins at their Rocky Mount Engine Plant in NC.

In her words:
“The scholarship allowed me to have breathing room to focus on school rather than the financial aspect of college as a first-gen student. It showed me my community supports me and my education.”

Her advice to future applicants:
“College is hard enough without stressing about the financials, just do it.”

Education is a lifeline and in Haiti, that lifeline is under threat. 🇭🇹📚

At least 1 in 4 children in Haiti can’t attend school right now. Violence has forced over 1,000 schools to close, and more than 680,000 children have been displaced.

Yet hope hasn’t disappeared. In a recent UNICEF poll, 93% of Haitian youth said school still represents hope for their future.
