This is my daughter. He Māori ia - she is Māori. It's taken me years to impress this fact on her because she has been suffering judgment of society due to her fair skin and being brought up outside of NZ. She was even embarrassed to model these cloaks for me. 4 days ago, she left to go live with my Mother in Australia. On the way to the airport she asked if I would teach her her pepeha (tribal/ancestral land connections). I felt so much joy in that moment that finally, she is ready to begin her journey. For all those parents who are experiencing something similar, be encouraging, be gentle and don't give up. Be an example. Show your children they are not 'less than' or wannabes because of skin colour or lack of knowledge.

"I'm an Indian, I'm one of Creator's children."
--Mathew King, LAKOTA
My Creator, today let me remember the reason I'm here on Mother Earth.
Let me look into my own eyes and see the beauty You have created.
Let me have good thoughts.
Being Indian is not the color of my skin.
Being Indian is to listen to my heart, to think only the things You have taught, to watch nature, and live in harmony.
Being Indian is to walk in prayer, to talk to You constantly during the day…

Totem poles are one of the most famous and significant symbols of many Indigenous tribes in North America, particularly in the Pacific Northwest region. These poles are typically made from large trees such as red cedar, intricately carved and painted with images of animals, humans, and mythical creatures. Each totem pole tells a unique story, reflecting the history, legends, and cultural values of the tribe.
Totem poles serve various functions within Indigenous communities. They may be erected to commemorate significant events such as births, marriages, or the death of a tribal member. Some totem poles are used as symbols of lineage or clan, illustrating the connections and heritage of families or tribes. Other poles may serve ceremonial purposes or mark the territory of a tribe.
The creation of a totem pole is a labor-intensive process requiring skill and dedication, typically performed by skilled artisans within the community. Carving and decorating a totem pole is not only an artistic endeavor but also a sacred act, showing reverence for ancestors and spiritual beings. Through generations, totem poles have become powerful symbols of the existence and development of Indigenous cultures, and today, they continue to attract attention and admiration from people all over the world.
