Big Sky Bravery

Big Sky Bravery Over 45,000 U.S. nonprofits serve veterans. We stand apart, supporting active-duty Special Operations Forces (SOF) and their families. Founded in 2015. history.

Based in Montana. There are over 45,000 nonprofits in the United States that support our veterans. Big Sky Bravery focuses solely on active duty SOF - those who remain in the fight. This community makes up only 3% of the U.S. Armed Forces but has suffered over half of all combat casualties in recent years. These are the few who have shouldered our freedom, our safety, and the longest conflict in U

.S. They do so under the radar and out of the spotlight. It is because of their selflessness and bravery that we are able to live in a safe and free America. Big Sky Bravery was founded in 2015 to provide weeklong programs (Task Forces) in Montana’s restorative surroundings. These Task Forces are an all-expense, world-class experience that grants these individuals the rare opportunity to decompress, rediscover what was lost on the battlefield, and experience the hope and freedom they are all fighting for.

For 250 years, we’ve gathered together. This summer, let’s gather with purpose.

Big Sky Bravery is inviting communities across the country to gather around what has always brought Americans together: good food, meaningful conversation, and a shared sense of purpose. As we celebrate the freedoms we enjoy, we also recognize the active-duty Special Operations Forces members and families who continue to defend them today.

BBQ for Bravery is a nationwide summer movement running now through Labor Day, encouraging supporters to host backyard barbecues, cookouts, neighborhood gatherings, and community events in celebration of 250 years of American freedom.

Our goal is simple: raise $13,500 (collectively), enough to fully fund one life-changing Big Sky Bravery experience for an active-duty Special Operations Forces recipient, spouse, or family member.

“Big Sky Bravery made me feel more valued and appreciated than anything else in our 18-year military career.” -SOF Spouse Recipient

The spouses of our nation’s elite fighting forces carry a silent weight. They hold the line at home, often without recognition, while navigating uncertainty, long separations, and the emotional cost of service. Our spouse programs are designed to honor that sacrifice and give them the time, support, and connection they deserve.

The freedoms we move through so casually were paid for by those who never made it home. Some gave every remaining year of their life so the rest of us could keep living ours freely. On Memorial Day, and with every breath we’re honored to take, we remember the men and women who no longer have the privilege to take theirs.

“Through nearly two decades of active service, I can’t think of a more impactful week than my experience with BSB.

Our community is especially hesitant to take a knee, take a breath, or take a look inside. BSB has crafted a space and experience that allows for and encourages a tight-lipped community to open up and unload baggage they might not have been aware they were carrying.

Living through the GWOT generation, we have heard ‘Thank you for your service’ more times than I can remember. My time with BSB was the first time I have ever FELT that sentiment, which is a humbling and life-changing experience.

To BSB staff, volunteers, and donors: you are changing and saving lives.”

In April, two active-duty Special Operations Task Forces stepped onto the Ranch for the first time and experienced firsthand the legacy being built for them.

After a day on the mountain followed by a crab boil at longtime BSB partner, Canyon Adventures, these individuals arrived at The Ranch as the sun set, gathering on the foundation of the future Lodge. Standing in what will become the “Question of the Night” Great Room (pictured above), they took in the stillness, the landscape, and the weight of what this place will hold for those who come after them.

For the first time, those we serve were able to see and feel the long-term commitment being made on their behalf.

Not just a place to visit, but a place to return to. The Great Room will become a cornerstone of every experience here. It is where “Questions of the Night” will be carried forward, creating space for honest conversation, reflection, and renewed strength.

As construction progresses, the remaining gifting opportunities are now underway. The Rec Barn, four Recipient Bedrooms, and Giving Wall opportunities are all in progress and available for those who want to help bring this next phase to life.

Introducing Monthly Flight Sponsors! ✈️🇺🇸

In 2026, Big Sky Bravery will serve 65 additional recipients compared to last year; each one requiring a flight to Montana and the opportunity to step away from the demands of service.

That growth translates to 65 additional flights and a $65,000 increase in direct program costs.

To meet this need, we are launching a focused monthly giving effort designed to fund every one of those flights and ensure that growth never outpaces our ability to serve.

An $83 monthly gift will provide one flight for one recipient each year.

Monthly Flight Sponsors will receive a custom patch to display their support for the active-duty Special Operations Forces community and the mission that serves them.

Your generosity provides more than a flight. It carries warriors, spouses, and families toward rest, reconnection, and hope when it’s needed most.

Welcome to the fifth edition of The Bravery Brief, our quarterly update designed to bring you closer to the heart of Big Sky Bravery. This quarter reflects a powerful start to 2026. Inside, you’ll find highlights from the kickoff and completion of our 2026 winter program season, a recap of our 4th Annual Fight Night, and continued progress on the Big Sky Bravery Ranch. You’ll also see updates on our financial position - made strong through your generosity - and how that support is allowing us to expand our reach and serve more members of the SOF community than ever before.

As always, this edition includes Voices of Valor, where we spotlight those who play a vital role in advancing this mission. These stories are a direct reflection of what this community makes possible. This quarter, we are honored to highlight Ander Thompson - an active-duty service member who, over the past eight years, has built a remarkable career serving across the globe as an engineer diver within Special Operations. Alongside his military service, Ander has quietly pursued a personal mission to climb the highest peak in every state - a pursuit that reflects the same discipline, resilience, and purpose that define his service. His current mission is twofold: to summit Denali and to raise funds in support of Big Sky Bravery. Through this effort, Ander continues to embody the spirit of service - leveraging personal challenge and purpose to give back to the broader SOF community.

Our goal with The Bravery Brief remains the same: to provide a transparent, meaningful look at how your support drives real impact - and to remind you that you are an essential part of this mission.
