VFW Nicholas Bloem Post 12112 Marine Lance Cpl. Nicholas William B. Bloem, 20, of Belgrade, Montana. Nicholas Bloem didn’t hide his future career goal. He was based at Billings.

Lance Cpl Bloem died when his amphibious Assault Vehicle was attacked by an improvised explosive device while conducting combat operations south of Haditha, Iraq. He was assigned to Marine Force Reserve’s 4th Reconnaissance Battalion, 4th Marine Division, Billings, Montana. During his first conversation with his high-school sweetheart, he told her he wanted to be a Marine.

“It was definitely his

calling in life. I don’t think he could have asked for a better way to die,” said Kacie Ouano. Bloem, 20, of Belgrade, Mont., he died Aug. 3, 2005, when his vehicle was hit by an explosive south of Haditha. Bloem graduated high school in 2003, moving to Montana with his family from Bellevue, Wash., just before his senior year. He wanted to enroll at Montana State University in Bozeman. His dream was to rise to the top of the command chain as an officer in the Marine Corps.

“It appealed to that part of him that wanted to overcome something that was seemingly insurmountable,” said his father, Al Bloem. His father said Bloem had been excited about joining the military and chose the Marines because “he wanted the hardest and he wanted the best.” He joined in July 2003.

“I was proud and he was beaming from ear to ear,” he said. He also is survived by his mother, Debbie. Bloem was killed in action on 08/03/05.

We have been tasked with bringing a raffle basket or items to the Veterans of Foreign Wars state convention in Miles City. The only requirement is that it showcase the Gallatin Valley. We have a few items like MSU hats, shirts ect, but would like to really showcase our local community. All proceeds from the raffle items go back to helping veterans and their families here in Montana. Please contact myself or Jim Matter if you are interested in donating or have questions.

Help us get the word out!

Thanks,

Bozeman Brickyard Captain and U.S. Marine Corps veteran Leslie Allen walked into this class at Montana State University's Honors College and asked the students a different version of the same question.

What does service look like when it's not wearing a uniform?
20 students, mostly women, leaned in.

They started naming how they were already serving: Tutoring. Trail crew. Volunteering at food banks. Being an election official. Big Brothers, Big Sisters. Blood drives. The list kept growing. Not because they were reaching for answers, but because they'd been doing the work all along without calling it what it was.

Joined by a member of VFW Nicholas Bloem Post 12112, together they brought a combined lifetime of service into a classroom and made the case that civic responsibility isn't something you age into. It's something you practice now, in the community right where you are.

The students were invited to two upcoming Brickyard service projects before the class ended.

This is Civic Valor. Veterans and young people in the same room, asking the questions that matter, finding out that the answers were already there.

What endures? The people who show up.
