sMiles for Katie , Inc is a non-profit charity whose mission is dedicated to bring awareness to Pulmonary Hypertension. To support the Pulmonary Hypertension Association in their efforts to bring hope to those who suffer and find a cure for this disease while honoring our daughter Katie McCarthy. Our Katie was a vibrant loving girl. She always embraced life. Her love of family, faith, and friends
was evident in everything Katie did. She was diagnosed in August 2012 with Primary Pulmonary Hypertension. A disease that is a type of high blood pressure that affects the arteries in the lungs and the right side of your heart. Pulmonary hypertension begins when tiny arteries in your lungs, called pulmonary arteries, and capillaries become narrowed, blocked or destroyed. This makes it harder for blood to flow through your lungs, and raises pressure within your lungs' arteries. As the pressure builds, your heart's lower right chamber (right ventricle) must work harder to pump blood through your lungs, eventually causing your heart muscle to weaken and eventually fail. Katie passed away April 30, 2013
