We recently sat down with Cordy Joan, Director of , to learn about the powerful story behind this remarkable project.

What began with a single quilt, created to honor a trans person’s present self after they shared a family heirloom that no longer reflected who they were, has grown into a nationwide collective creating handmade quilts for trans recipients. Rooted in traditions of care, memory, and life transitions, each quilt is developed through storytelling, collaboration, and love.

As Cordy shared, “Quilts help us see ourselves on longer timescales.”

Now in its third chapter, Transmissions Quilts has created 46 quilts and continues to support trans artists by ensuring every quilter is paid for their work. The traveling exhibition incorporates oral histories and other storytelling practices that deepen connections between makers, recipients, and communities.

We’re incredibly honored to host the Transmissions Quilts Tour at Waterfall Arts June 5–12. Join us in celebrating this moving project and the stories stitched into every quilt. 💙

A big thank you to our local partners who helped us shape what our community will experience during this special exhibit. The Belfast Poetry Festival OUT Maine

Participating artists in the Belfast exhibition include Travis Clough, Dan Toomre, Maddy Magnuson, Danika Azevedo, Joey Dehais, Abby Meyeroal, Nailah Taman, Jordan Lister, Lunilah Project, hail linnet, Harvest Fladd, Maggie Ruth Haaland, and Cordy Joan.

This summer, Madison Cook brings imagination and hands-on creativity to two exciting camps at Waterfall Arts:

Cardboard City
6/29–7/3 | 9 AM–3 PM | Ages 10–15
Campers will design and build imaginative structures and worlds using recycled materials.

Little Rooms
7/6–7/10 | 9 AM–12 PM | Ages 7–10
Younger artists will create tiny spaces full of personality, storytelling, and creativity.

Through both camps, Cook encourages students to see themselves as artists, builders, and creative problem-solvers while discovering the creative potential of everyday materials.

Cook, a Belfast native, has been creating since childhood, spending much of her time building fairy houses in the woods. These early experiences shaped her understanding of structure, natural materials, and the environment. Inspired by architects Alvar and Aino Aalto, Cook continues to explore the connection between architecture, nature, and human experience.

Her connection to Waterfall Arts began long before becoming an instructor. As a child, she attended the former Governor Anderson School before it became Waterfall Arts, and later took art classes here herself!

Now returning as a teacher, Cook says, “I feel lucky to have the opportunity to teach here and inspire young students to see themselves as artists and worldbuilders.”

As Make Your Mark comes to a close tonight, we want to thank everyone who joined this community experiment and helped transform the Clifford Gallery into a living work of art.

Over the course of the exhibition, the space was filled with drawings, messages, sculptures, and collaborations from visitors of all ages. Inspired by the energy of street art, the show became more than an exhibition—it became a shared creative space shaped by participation, curiosity, and connection.

At its heart, Make Your Mark celebrates the idea that public art belongs to everyone. Street art has long been a way for people to express identity, challenge ideas, and build community in shared spaces. This exhibition brings that same spirit indoors, inviting every visitor to participate rather than simply observe. No artistic experience is required—only curiosity and a willingness to contribute.

Program Director, , reflected on the experience, saying, “It has been amazing to open the gallery doors each day to see what appears on the walls. And it's obvious that the participants understand something fundamentally human: we are innately and intricately connected to each other. Messages like ‘love is more powerful than hate,’ ‘remember we are all doing our best,’ and ‘spread joy’ mingle with pipe cleaner spiders, geometric collages, cardboard pizzas, and colorful drawings, both realistic and abstract, of rabbits and birds and rotary telephones. Blurring the usual lines and transforming the passive act of observation into an active journey of discovery has been a meaningful exercise in trust and a deeply moving example of where curiosity and originality meet.”

As the exhibition ends, we leave inspired by the creativity, honesty, and generosity shared within the gallery walls. Thank you to everyone who added their voice, imagination, and mark to this remarkable community artwork.

Have you had a chance to visit Make Your Mark before it closes on May 29?

Inspired by the spirit of street art, this interactive exhibition invites visitors of all ages to pause, participate, and leave something of their own behind—a drawing, a message, or a small artwork. Over the course of the exhibition, the gallery continues to grow and transform with every new contribution, reminding us that creativity flourishes when everyone is invited to take part.

Our Institutional Advancement Director, Katherine Devereux, MPS, recently reflected on the project in our blog post Before I Die: Time, Community, and a Shared Wall. Here’s a short excerpt:

"A wall filled with handwriting is not static. It accumulates. It revises itself. It holds traces of people who will never meet, yet are bound through a shared act of answering one question; Before I die, I want to…

At first glance, the responses appear familiar. Some are expansive; travel the world, publish a book, learn to fly. Others are intimate; forgiveness, be a better listener, not be afraid anymore. Still others resist aspiration altogether, offering instead a quiet register of presence; feel at peace, laugh more. Taken individually, they read as fragments of private intention. Taken together, they begin to function differently, becoming less a collection of statements than a record of how a community, in a given moment, understands time, death, and what it means to live."

Summer is the perfect time to try something new. We are gearing up for the change in seasons that brings visitors passing through, friends gathering, and a little more room in everyone’s schedule for creativity, exploration, and play. That’s why we love offering shorter, bite-sized workshops during these looser, more leisurely months—giving folks the chance to experience a new medium without committing to a full 6- or 8-week session.

In the hot shop especially, summer calls for a different rhythm. With higher temperatures and a focus on pacing ourselves, one-night workshops are the perfect fit—and we’re thrilled to be offering a wide variety for all skill levels. Beginners can jump in to make pint glasses, wavy bowls, and paperweights, while more experienced students can sharpen advanced techniques like rolling, tweezing, trimming, and pulling cane alongside a teammate in the shop.

We’re especially excited to have Brian teaching these classes this summer, sharing his expertise and passion with students of all experience levels.

There’s truly something for everyone, and summer always flies by faster than we think. Make the most of it—come create with us. 🔥

If you haven’t taken a class with Chandra Elmendorf yet… you’re truly missing out.

After sitting down with Chandra—ceramics instructor, studio subscriber, art market vendor, and Clay Studio Moderator—we walked away feeling as grounded and inspired as the earth she works with.

Her connection to clay began early. As a child, she searched for the “dirt that would stick together,” shaping sun-dried clay balls just to smash and remake them again. By age four, she was living in rural Spain, surrounded by artisans, farm life, and a family building their home by hand—experiences that deeply shaped her creative path.

Years later, after studying 2D design, painting, and sculpture (including time in France working with limestone), Chandra realized something powerful: her early relationship with clay was a gift.

“It’s our birthright to access the knowledge and the skill of what the earth gives us. All you need is clay, sand, and fire.”

With over 20 years of experience—including studying wilderness survival and primitive pottery techniques—Chandra is passionate about making ceramics accessible, intuitive, and deeply human.

Since moving to Belfast in 2018, she’s become an integral part of the Waterfall Arts ceramics community and began teaching Hand Building classes in 2023.
