Wondering whether cohousing can actually be affordable? This article from Shelterforce explores exactly that question—and the answer is encouraging.

National cohousing leaders are rethinking the model to make it more accessible, from retrofit neighborhoods to partnerships with community land trusts. It's a reminder that the heart of cohousing isn't square footage or siding, but the community we build together.

Cohousing offers a vision of lower-cost, community-centered living, but communities in the US face barriers that drive up costs.

The popular repair cafe is one of thousands worldwide, including several in Maine. It started more than half a dozen years ago.

The community is invited to a Free Stuff Party & Clothing Swap!
Black Friday, Nov 28, 1-4 pm, at Belfast Coworking (not Cohousing), 17 Main St in downtown.

Whether you're participating in the economic blackout from Nov 25 to Dec 2, or you just like free stuff, or you have things cluttering up your life that you need rid of, this event is for you!

It's completely free, and there's no requirement to bring anything to swap. Just come take stuff if you want! Or if you have clothes, toys, or household items that are still good but that you no longer love, donate them and let them find new homes with people who will!

Your old stuff will make someone else's day, and vice versa! Please make sure everything is clean and usable. We'll donate whatever is left over.

There will be snacks and live ukulele music by Crystal!

We had a Mini-Retreat yesterday, organized by our Social Fabric Circle. Some of us went to the Penobscot Marine Museum in Searsport. (The museum is closed for the season, but we made special arrangements.) Another group went on a hike. We joined together afterward for lunch afterward, catered by the Belfast Community Coop.

🚀 BIG NEWS FOR WALDO COUNTY: EXPANDING THE HEART OF HOPE! 🚀

The need in our community is growing, and thanks to you, so are we!

We are thrilled to announce that in January 2026, the Kindness Community Market is moving to its own dedicated building! This is more than just a change of address, it's a massive step in strengthening our commitment to providing food, comfort, and hope for the future to our neighbors in need, five days a week.

This exciting expansion is made possible by incredible angel donors who have fully funded the new building. This means that your generous donations will not be tied up in mortgage payments or construction costs.

Instead, your gifts will go where they matter most:

🛒 Stocking Shelves: Filling the new market with high-quality, fresh food.

🏠 Maintaining Infrastructure: Ensuring a reliable, year-round operation.

⛽ Fueling Our Mission: Continuing to serve over 400 meals daily and providing the stable presence our community can count on.

This expansion allows the Belfast Soup Kitchen to further its role as the Backbone of Waldo County Food Security, ensuring that when smaller, temporary options are closed, we remain always open for hope.

Want to help us fill the shelves of our new market?

Improvements are happening! Long-awaited replacement of siding on the south side of the Common House is almost complete. Soon, we will have work done on the pedestrian path that goes through the Village. Good to have this done before the snow flies.
