The labor movement has shaped this country in ways that still matter today. (This will allow for the standard 72 hours/3days for primary bidding)
➡ July 6: Awards will post no later than 1600 CT and protest begins at 1600 CT
➡ July 7: Protest will end at 1600 CT
(This will allow for the standard 24-hour protest period)
While we understand that this may have caused an inconvenience for you, TWU 556 worked on preserving similar timelines to allow for both full-time bidding and the protest period.

DELTA DENTAL INSURANCE ISSUE:

Delta Dental had a filing issue which caused a number of members to denied when submitting claims. This was a momentary glitch and is being corrected. The issue should be resolved by the end of the day. If you had a claim denied, contact your provider and have them resubmit the claim tomorrow (7/3)(Corrected, Thanks) and hopefully it will be resolved.

Thanks to those who sent me a message today, as you were asking, others were asking to and there has been movement on the issue.

A Fathers Function is to help prepare their children for the rigors of the real world. All we can do is hope we raised them to be the best humans they can be. To be someone that contributes something productive to those around them.

Being a father has had the most profound effect on me and how I go about advocating for each and every member. Happy Fathers Day to all the fathers out there AND the spouses that support their efforts to be great fathers.

STATEMENT FROM TWU LOCAL 556 REGARDING THE CABIN JUMPSEAT:

Earlier today, Southwest Airlines notified TWU Local 556 that the Flight Attendant jumpseat policy for non-revenue travel will revert to allowing all employees to occupy the jumpseat, regardless of whether they are crew-qualified.

This reversal was prompted by Southwest settling a grievance filed by another workgroup. As a result, Southwest Management has elected to broadly restore access to the jumpseat for all employees.

TWU Local 556’s position is that jumpseat occupancy should be limited to crew-qualified employees. This is not about privilege or access. It is about safety for everyone on the airplane.

Flight Attendants are aviation’s first responders in the cabin. We are trained and recurrently qualified in emergency procedures, evacuations and cabin safety. We know that an aircraft is safest when every person occupying a jumpseat has the required level of training and operational familiarity that Flight Attendants do.

Members should know that TWU Local 556 was not consulted on Management’s decision. As the front line of our operation, it is critical that we are consulted on all operational decisions that impact safety and our work environment. This issue directly impacts cabin safety and the workgroup responsible for it – yet the Company moved forward without engaging the safety professionals most affected by the policy.

Southwest elected to broadly restore access to the jumpseat for all employees. Management has indicated that jumpseat occupancy training will be required; however, Local 556 has not seen these requirements.

With certainty, we can say that TWU Local 556 will always advocate for training to adequately prepare someone for the jumpseat and all the duties and responsibilities that it entails. We will work closely with our Safety, Health and Security Committee as we navigate this reversal and regarding the development of jumpseat training per Article 25 in our contract.

Throughout this process, we have also seen comments that minimized the role of Flight Attendants and the responsibilities we carry every day. While disagreements over policy are expected, dismissing the expertise of aviation’s first responders in the cabin is neither productive nor reflective of the realities of our profession. We respect that many employees may welcome this change but dismissing or minimizing the role of Flight Attendants is unacceptable. Our concerns are rooted in safety, training and the responsibilities we carry every day.

Local 556 will continue to advocate for policies that recognize the safety-critical role of Flight Attendants, protect our crews and passengers, and require meaningful engagement with frontline workgroups before decisions are made about our work, our safety and our operation.
