National Association for Children of Addiction

National Association for Children of Addiction Using our network of the most respected experts in the field, NACoA provides solutions to address these impacts effectively.

NACoA envisions a world in which no child who struggles because of family addiction will be left unsupported. NACoA gives those who touch children’s lives daily the training and tools needed to help them see the pain and confusion of struggling children and respond appropriately both systemically in their professions and personally with understanding hearts. In a word, our programs give a voice to

impacted children who suffer in silence each day:
-Celebrating Families! ™, an evidence-based, trauma-informed, skill building program of 16 sessions serving the whole family: children ages birth-18, their parents & caregivers. Versions also available to support Hispanic & Native American families.
-Children's Program Kit, a comprehensive tool kit enabling implementation and ongoing managing of a complete children’s educational support program in schools, at treatment facilities, afterschool programs, weekend camps and summer day camps, or at religious institutions.
-The Clergy Education and Training Project®, developed in collaboration with major national faith organizations, it provides education and tools to help faith communities understand and address addiction and its devastating impact on families and children effectively.

Healing from the disease of addiction is not just an individual journey — it’s a collective one. When families come together in recovery, profound transformation takes root: hope replaces blame, understanding replaces shame, and family fun and love replaces isolation. Recovery helps bring families back together as families heal together.

Families affected by substance use disorders can thrive in the summer when spending quality time together and engaging in fun-filled activities that strengthen bonds and maintain safety for everyone! ACOAs – adults who were impacted by parental substance use as children - can celebrate being a kid again while providing great experiences for the entire family during the summer months! While a significant decrease in teen smoking may be considered one of the most significant public health successes of recent decades, we need to look closer at teen ni****ne use, and today’s replacement with cannabis: “Youth ni****ne exposure may not be declining as rapidly as cigarette smoking rates alone suggest. Although ni****ne remains the most common substance used in e-cigarettes, cannabis va**ng has become progressively prevalent. Studies indicate that approximately 30% to more than 50% of adolescents who use e-cigarettes also report va**ng cannabis or THC.”

Summertime invites fun celebrations and gatherings with family and friends. But for families impacted by parental substance use, kids and teens may need a watchful eye after a fun day at a weekend party or cookout. If an adult attempts to drive children home who shouldn’t be behind the wheel, with gentle care help arrange travel options for a safe return home for everyone at the party.

is important for anyone working to provide support to children of addiction (COAs). These programs may be "kids play" but it is hard, demanding, and at times extremely emotional work. NACoA is so grateful to anyone who provides support services to children and families impacted by parental addiction. Please remember to take good care of yourself.

During the summer months, many grandparents have an opportunity to be more involved with their grandchildren. This is treasured time for kids & teens living with the impact of parental substance use. Grandparents can provide the care, consistency, and modeling of healthy emotions and communication that may not be possible when parents are struggling with the disease of addiction.

Graduations are a time for celebration our high school seniors – for great accomplishment and the beginning of the next chapter of their lives. As safe and caring adults of youth growing up in homes affected by parental substance use, it is essential to remember kids are watching. Keep the focus on kids & teens during this year's graduations! Creating alcohol-free graduation parties demonstrates healthy behavior for our youth and is a wonderful way to celebrate them during these special moments. Talk to your graduates about safe behavior so they can return home after the big celebration with family and friends!

NACoA mourns the loss of Sis Wenger, a tireless advocate who was the face and voice for NACoA and the children impacted by parental substance use. To continue her vision and legacy, the Sis Wenger Memorial Fund has been created to guide and inspire future generations to support children and families impacted by parental substance use and develop programming for healing and healthier living. Additionally, this fund will help support the Faith Leader Institute, the newest version of The Clergy Education and Training Project® - comprehensive support for faith leaders that included training manuals, handbooks and a seminary curriculum - which will be dedicated in her honor.
