Green Teacher of the Year 2026

Dublin Elementary School

Diane Thompson, Media Specialist

Congratulations to Mrs. Diane Thompson, 2026 Green Teacher of the Year! As a leader of Dublin Elementary’s Green Team, she is recognized for her deep commitment to promoting sustainability, environmental stewardship, and student voice throughout the school community. Her contributions to Dublin’s Green school application along with environmentally friendly changes to school practices have been invaluable in shaping a culture of environmentally conscious staff and students.

She collaborates with grade-level teams to create meaningful, hands-on learning experiences that foster appreciation for the environment. Her work included partnering with master gardeners to have students repurpose recyclable materials into indoor plant containers, maintaining our many indoor and outdoor plants and trees, and supporting the growth, harvest, and sale of student-grown lettuce to Dublin’s school cafeteria. She also played a vital role in our school-sponsored legacy garden, a lasting green space planted by students and families.

The hallmark of her leadership is empowering students to research environmental issues and advocate for change. One powerful example was her support of a student-written letter requesting the removal of invasive trees from our schoolyard. Through student research and recommendations for native replacements, this effort resulted in a shared experience where students researched, planted, and cared for new trees.

Her dedication to developing environmentally responsible students has created a lasting culture of sustainability in our school. Her commitment to developing environmental stewards makes Dublin PROUD!

Congratulations to Mrs. Thompson on this well-deserved recognition and to Dublin Elementary for achieving MD Green School certification in 2026.

The Environmental Scholarship Program began at the Susquehannock Recycling Center in Bel Air in 1972 and has awarded more than $300,000 in scholarships over the years. We are so thankful for the beautiful weather we’ve been experiencing at Harford Glen! ☀️🌿
Yesterday, North Bend Elementary arrived, and Mrs. Palmere’s class got right to work. They harvested worm castings to enrich the gardens, gathered fresh leafy greens and chives for dinner, and helped care for the land by removing Japanese stiltgrass before it goes to flower.
This morning, they headed out birding to explore the biodiversity of bird species in the area and to see bird banding up close. 🐦
We love seeing students learning, working, and connecting with nature in such meaningful ways!

As part of the Environmental Stewardship unit, 5th grade classes develop environmental action plans after returning from their trip to Harford Glen. A few years ago, Mrs. Brenner’s class at Youth’s Benefit Elementary launched a pollinator garden as their project—and since then, each class has continued to build on their work.
This year’s class took it even further by enhancing the garden space and adding a vermicomposting bin to their classroom. They even used the compost they created to enrich the soil in their new raised beds!
Way to go, Mrs. Brenner’s class, for your dedication to sustainability and making a lasting impact! 🌱👏

Harford Academy spent two fun-filled days at Harford Glen immersed in hands-on learning and outdoor discovery! Students had the unique opportunity to witness bird banding, explore local ecosystems by catching stream critters, and express their creativity through nature-inspired watercolor art. They also learned about sustainable living by discovering how to grow their own food—and even planted their own microgreens to take home.
The experience continued with engaging lessons on animal senses and defenses, bringing the natural world to life in exciting ways. To wrap up their visit, students gathered around a campfire, sharing songs and creating lasting memories together.
It was truly an unforgettable two days of exploration, learning, and connection with nature! 🌿🔥🎨
