The two-hour marathon barrier was broken yesterday - twice. The capability God has put into the human body is phenomenal. Let's put this kind of speed into perspective. The fastest 5K run by anyone in our team's history was Cooper's 15:49 at NXR last fall. Cooper's really fast, and that was a great race - he won his heat against hundreds of top runners in the southeast. Only a very small percentage of high school XC runners will ever run that fast. Let's just suppose that Cooper was able to hold that pace for eight 5Ks in a row, without stopping. In that case, he would have finished a marathon 14 minutes behind Sabastian Sawe yesterday. That's right, Sawe averaged a 14:10 5K pace! So the two hour marathon may not be a realistic goal for our team, but it does remind us that if you put in the training, you will improve from wherever you are and may even run faster than you ever thought you could.
