WHAT DOES THE VFW ACTUALLY DO FOR VETERANS?
Most veterans recognize the letters VFW, but many do not know why the organization was created, who is eligible to join, or what it actually does beyond operating local posts and hosting community events.
VFW stands for Veterans of Foreign Wars of the United States. Its roots go back to 1899, when veterans returning from the Spanish-American War and the Philippine Insurrection began forming local organizations. Many came home wounded or sick at a time when there was no established system of veterans’ medical care or reliable pension support. They joined together to fight for the benefits and recognition they believed veterans had earned. Those early groups eventually became the organization now known as the VFW.
The VFW’s mission is broader than providing a place for veterans to gather. The organization advocates for veterans’ legislation, helps veterans and families navigate VA benefits, supports military members, offers educational and scholarship programs, provides certain financial-assistance programs, participates in community service, and works to preserve the history and sacrifices of military service.
One of the most common misunderstandings involves membership eligibility. The VFW is not open to every person who served in the military. Membership generally requires honorable service and qualifying service connected to an overseas conflict. Eligibility may be established through an authorized campaign medal, qualifying service in Korea for at least 30 consecutive or 60 nonconsecutive days, or receipt of hostile-fire or imminent-danger pay.
That does not necessarily mean the veteran had to exchange fire with an enemy or receive a combat decoration. Many veterans served in support, aviation, logistics, maintenance, medical, transportation, communications, security, and other duties while deployed to qualifying locations.
The important issue is whether the veteran’s service meets one of the VFW’s recognized eligibility categories. A DD Form 214, personnel records, deployment orders, medal documentation, or military pay records may be needed to verify that eligibility.
Active-duty, National Guard, and Reserve members may also be eligible when their qualifying service meets the requirements. A veteran who is unsure should not assume either way based only on the military job or whether the veteran personally considers the service to have been combat. The local post or VFW membership office can review the records and make that determination.
Family members who are not personally eligible for VFW membership may potentially qualify for the VFW Auxiliary through an eligible veteran. The Auxiliary includes certain spouses, surviving spouses, parents, grandparents, children, grandchildren, and siblings who meet its requirements. Auxiliary members support veterans, military families, local posts, and community programs, but Auxiliary membership is separate from membership in the VFW itself.
The VFW is also widely known for helping veterans file and appeal VA claims. Its accredited service officers may assist with reviewing records, preparing claims, explaining VA decisions, and pursuing available review options.
A veteran does not have to be a VFW member to receive that claims assistance, and the service is provided without charge. That is important because some veterans avoid asking for help because they assume they must first pay dues or join the organization.
Membership and representation are not the same thing. Joining the VFW may provide camaraderie, opportunities to serve other veterans, access to local and national programs, membership benefits, and a voice within the organization. It is not supposed to be a fee paid in exchange for help with a VA claim.
Veterans should also understand that the national VFW and an individual local post are not exactly the same experience. One post may have an active service officer, frequent community projects, a strong Auxiliary, and members who regularly help veterans in crisis. Another may focus primarily on social activities or may have limited volunteers and resources.
A disappointing experience at one post does not necessarily describe the entire organization, but the VFW name also does not guarantee that every local post will provide the same level of activity, communication, or assistance.
Before joining, visit the post, speak with its leadership, ask what programs are active, and find out what members actually do in the community. Some veterans want fellowship and a place to spend time with others who understand military service. Others want to volunteer, advocate, assist younger veterans, participate in ceremonies, or help preserve the history of their local veteran community.
There is no single correct reason to join.
The VFW has also played a national advocacy role in major veterans’ issues involving healthcare, disability compensation, education, toxic exposures, cemeteries, memorials, and accountability within the VA system. A veteran may never enter a local VFW post and still benefit from laws and programs that veterans organizations helped pursue.
The bottom line is this: The VFW is more than a building, social club, or place with a canteen. It was founded by veterans who returned from overseas conflicts and had to fight for care and benefits, and it continues to provide advocacy, claims assistance, community service, financial and educational programs, and fellowship. Membership has specific service requirements, but veterans do not have to become members to receive free help from a VFW-accredited service officer.
