ON THIS DAY IN HISTORY:

The Space Shuttle Challenger disaster occurred on January 28, 1986, when the orbiter disintegrated 73 seconds into its tenth mission, STS-51-L, at 11:39 a.m. EST, killing all seven crew members. The accident was caused by the failure of O-ring seals in the right solid rocket booster, which were compromised by unusually cold temperatures, leading to a midair breakup approximately 46,000 feet above the Atlantic Ocean.

ON THIS DATE IN MILITARY HISTORY:

1939 – First flight of the Lockheed P-38 Lightning.

The Lockheed P-38 Lightning was a distinctive American World War II fighter with twin booms and a central cockpit. Nicknamed the “fork-tailed devil” by the Luftwaffe, it served in many roles, including es**rt fighter, ground attack, and reconnaissance. Most successful in the Pacific and China-Burma-India theaters, it was flown by top U.S. aces Richard B**g and Thomas McGuire. The P-38 remained in production throughout U.S. involvement in the war, from Pearl Harbor to V-J Day.
