Who fills the gap when families feel lost?

For families caring for children with complex medical needs, there can be constant uncertainty about whether they’ll have everything their child needs. From medical supplies and equipment to respite care and other essential services, accessing support isn’t always simple.

Families shouldn’t have to carry the worry of whether the resources their child depends on will be available. They deserve support they can access when they need it, along with people who understand their journey and can help them navigate the process.

At AEKF, we believe no family should have to navigate this journey alone. Every family deserves the support they need to spend less time worrying about what’s missing and more time cherishing time together.

Pink Santa is one of our favorite times of year to come together and help brighten the holidays for medically fragile children in our community. Through donations, AEKF provides holiday stockings, gift cards, and more to bring extra joy to families during the season. 💗

Who fills the gap when families feel lost?

For families caring for children with complex medical needs, navigating care can mean sharing deeply personal experiences with different providers and organizations, often having to explain their situation again and again. Connecting families with resources matters, but it isn’t the same as having someone who understands their story and can walk alongside them through the process.

These challenges are part of a larger conversation about the support available to medically dependent children and their families. Our Founder and President, Melissa Keller, recently testified at a public hearing about the Medically Dependent Children Program (MDCP), advocating for families navigating these complex systems and the care their children need.

MDCP helps eligible children access services in their homes and communities, but access remains a challenge. As discussions continue around expanding access, it’s important to consider both how families get connected to services and the support they receive along the way.

Our Founder and President, Melissa Keller, recently testified at the Medically Dependent Children Program (MDCP) public hearing hosted by the Texas Health and Human Services Commission, advocating on behalf of medically dependent children and their families. 💛

At AEKF, we believe these children and families deserve to have their voices heard and their needs represented. Melissa’s testimony reflects our ongoing commitment to advocating for children with complex medical needs and the support their families need.

Today, we recognize World Hospice and Palliative Care Day, alongside Texas Supportive Palliative Care Awareness Day, a new statewide recognition established to raise awareness of the importance of supportive palliative care.

For children with complex medical needs, specialized pediatric respite and hospice homes can offer something families urgently need: access to care designed around their child’s needs, along with time and support for the whole family.

Across the country, organizations are working to make these homes a reality. Through our work alongside the National Center for Pediatric Palliative Care Homes, we’re part of this growing movement to expand access to specialized care. Here in Texas, AEKF is working toward bringing this resource to our state through Abbey House, a dedicated pediatric respite and hospice facility designed to help families find support and cherish time together.

There is still work to do to ensure families can access the care they need, but we’re proud to be part of the movement working toward that future. 🦋

Today, on International Children’s Palliative Care Day, we’re recognizing children with serious medical conditions whose care needs and experiences too often go unseen.

More than 80,000 medically complex children live in Texas. Pediatric palliative care helps address the physical and emotional challenges of serious illness, with a focus on a child’s comfort, quality of life, and support for the entire family.

At AEKF, we’re working to bring greater awareness to pediatric palliative care and the families who need it.

What does support really look like for families caring for a child with complex medical needs?

When a child is diagnosed with a serious medical condition, a family’s world can change overnight. Suddenly, parents and caregivers are navigating medical decisions, appointments, equipment, medications, and a level of care they never expected. And when that responsibility becomes overwhelming, many families have nowhere to turn.

As we approach World Hospice and Palliative Care Day on October 10, we’re highlighting the voices of families who know this reality firsthand and helping shine a light on the importance of compassionate, family-centered care.

That’s why we’re working toward Abbey House, a dedicated pediatric respite and hospice facility where families can find support, respite, and time together when they need it most.

We’re proud to share that our Founder & President, Melissa Keller, has been appointed to the Texas Health and Human Services Commission Palliative Care Interdisciplinary Advisory Council (PCIAC), where she will represent patients and family caregivers.

With her lived experience and years of advocacy, Melissa will bring the voices of medically fragile children and their families to statewide conversations surrounding palliative care.

Congratulations, Melissa! We’re so proud to see you take on this new role and continue advocating for the families we serve. 💙
