Beefing Up for Backpacks is on a mission to provide high-quality protein to children in need by
adding a nutritious 1-ounce beef stick to every backpack distributed through Pennsylvania’s
weekend food programs.

📢 Hey Steeler’s Fans!

Pittsburgh Legend “Da Beard” former NFL football player and beef producer, Brett Keisel has a special message to share:

“Nutrition is the foundation for performance, whether you’re on the field, in the classroom, or growing up and finding your path. As a former athlete and a beef producer, I believe protein is one of the most important building blocks for healthy development. Beefing Up Backpacks is helping make sure underserved children have access to the nourishment they need to stay focused, grow stronger, and reach their potential.”

Background: Brett Keisel (born September 19, 1978) is an American former professional football player who was a defensive end for 13 seasons with the Pittsburgh Steelers of the National Football League (NFL). He played college football for the BYU Cougars. He was selected by the Steelers in the seventh round of the 2002 NFL draft.

A huge THANK YOU to the Rotary Club of Latrobe for their generous support of Beefing Up Backpacks!

Because of community partners like you, we are able to continue providing shelf-stable beef sticks to children participating in weekend backpack food programs, helping ensure kids have access to nutritious, high-quality protein when school meals are unavailable.

The Rotary Club of Latrobe exemplifies Rotary’s motto of “Service Above Self,” supporting local communities through leadership, volunteerism, and meaningful outreach. Their club also helps provide weekend backpack programs to local schools, making a direct impact on children facing food insecurity in their own community.

We were especially excited that BUBP beef sticks have been included in the weekend backpacks distributed to local students helping provide a convenient, shelf-stable source of protein when kids need it most.

Beefing Up Backpacks is BACK! 🙌🏻🎒🍽

The Greater Pittsburgh Community Food Bank has received a new shipment of beef sticks, which will be distributed to 25 Backpack Program partners across 11 counties, helping provide nutritious protein to 7,500 children each month.

This initiative helps ensure kids have access to high-quality protein outside of the school day, supporting health, growth, and food security across the region.

We’re proud to share the 2025 Beefing Up Backpacks Final Report! 🙌

This year, 60,000 beef sticks were produced from 5,000 lbs. of Pennsylvania beef, helping us provide a nutritious, shelf-stable source of protein to 9,500 youth across 17 counties. 🥩🎒
