Our galleries will be closed on Friday, October 16 and Saturday, October 17 so our staff & volunteers can prepare for our Annual Event, Art of Pairing: Bower at the Bayou.

Join us for an immersive evening filled with art, music, food, beverages and celebration while supporting Bower Center's mission to bring meaningful arts programming to our region. 🎨 Instructor Spotlight: Veronica Jackson 🎨

What makes a simple soup can one of the most recognizable works of art in history? Why do artists like Jean-Michel Basquiat, Kara Walker, and Simone Leigh continue to shape conversations about culture today?

Join acclaimed artist and educator Veronica Jackson for her 6-week class, The Stories Behind Contemporary Art, an engaging class that explores the people, ideas, and stories behind some of the most influential contemporary artists of the 20th and 21st centuries. Participants will gain new tools for understanding sculpture, painting, printmaking, digital art, and installation works while learning how to "speak" the language of contemporary art.

Veronica Jackson's work honors and illuminates Black women through symbolic storytelling. Drawing on her background as an architect, exhibit designer, and visual artist, she brings a unique perspective that helps make contemporary art approachable, meaningful, and engaging. Her work has been exhibited throughout Virginia and beyond, and is included in collections such as the Virginia Museum of Fine Arts.

Looking for family fun and great music? We've got your entire Saturday covered!

Start the afternoon with CAB Kids! Opera on the James Presents Bremen Town Musicians at 12 PM, where a beloved fairy tale comes to life through music, storytelling, and fun. After the performance, young audience members can enjoy a Q&A with the performers and themed crafts inspired by the show. It's a wonderful experience for children and families to create, learn, and explore together.

Then return in the evening for Big Band of the Blue Ridge from 6-8 PM. This talented 16-piece ensemble brings classic and contemporary big band jazz to the stage, delivering an unforgettable evening of live music right here in Bedford.
