Mosaics of Armenia: Voices from the Homeland was more than a season finale. It was a celebration of stories, traditions, and voices brought together through music. As each work formed part of a larger mosaic, so did every artist, supporter, and audience member who helped make MCMA’s very first season possible.

Thank you for joining us on this journey and for helping transform these concerts into something more than just performances: a community brought together through music. We cannot wait to share what comes next.

Until next season....coming September 🎶🎵

Described as “a musician of abundant gifts and bountiful ideas” by New York Concert Review and “an immensely talented and dynamic performer” by Deseret Morning News, Armenian-American conductor, pianist, and composer Karén Hakobyan is a versatile force on the international music scene. Since making his Carnegie Hall debut at age seventeen, he has performed in major concert halls across Armenia, Argentina, Mexico, Germany, the UK, Belgium, France, Japan, and the United States.

Karén is the Founder, Principal Conductor, and Artistic Director of Pegasus: The Orchestra, based in New York. As part of Pegasus’s Fifth Anniversary Season, he conducted all five Rachmaninoff Piano Concertos with five soloists in a single evening at Lincoln Center, earning widespread critical acclaim. Fanfare magazine described Hakobyan’s Brahms Fourth Symphony as “a shattering experience, not to be missed.” Notable conducting engagements include leading the Armenian National Chamber Orchestra in Armenia, the Ryukyu Symphony Orchestra in Japan, and guest conducting the MostArts International Festival Orchestra.

Last season was a celebration of American music, uniting two complementary programs—Americana and New World. Americana honored the centennial of Gershwin’s Rhapsody in Blue, which Hakobyan both played and conducted from the piano, while New World concluded the season with Dvořák’s Symphony No. 9, praised by New York Classical Review as “delivered with commanding energy and a strong sense of ensemble.”

A top prizewinner in multiple international piano and composition competitions, Hakobyan holds degrees from the Manhattan School of Music, Mannes College of Music, and the University of Utah. His performances have been broadcast on WQXR, WFMT, WSKG, Argentine National Radio, Monterrey’s Op. 102, Armenian National Radio, Al Jazeera TV, Public TV of Armenia, and Voice of America TV.

Suren Bagratuni won critical acclaim for his first CD release on the Ongaku label featuring works for solo cello. Fanfare called his recording of the Prokofiev and Shostakovich sonatas with pianist Adrian Oetiker “impressively bold accounts.” His recordings on the BGR (Blue Griffin Recordings) label include sonatas by Debussy and Rachmaninoff, Stravinsky’s Suite Italienne, and the Bach Cello Suites, described in Fanfare as “captivating, occasionally controversial, and always expressive.” His latest recording, Complete Beethoven Works for Cello and Piano, has received very positive reviews.

Mr. Bagratuni’s discography includes 16 CD and LP recordings, including Music of Armenia, featuring five world premieres and an American premiere. He has recorded trios by Beethoven, Brahms, Tchaikovsky, and Rachmaninoff with the Moscow Conservatory Trio, and for Centaur, Melodiya, and Marco Polo. His performances have been featured on CBC, Bayerischer Rundfunk, WNYC, NPR, and WGBH Boston.

A passionate advocate for contemporary music, he has commissioned and premiered numerous works, including five pieces written for him by Armenian composer Vache Sharafyan. His debut with the Saint Paul Chamber Orchestra included the American premiere of Tigran Mansourian’s Double Concerto.

Mr. Bagratuni is Professor of Cello at Michigan State University, co-chair of the string area, and Artistic Director of the Cello Plus Festival. Born in Yerevan, Armenia, he studied at the Moscow Conservatory and New England Conservatory, and won first prize at the 1988 Vittorio Gui International Competition in Italy.
