Mission Statement

The Coalition strives to protect and improve the waters of NYC's Croton Watershed as well as all New York State watersheds. We are an alliance of individuals and groups who believe that safe, clean and affordable drinking water is a basic human right. OUR COALITION AND THE ISSUES WE FACE
Who We Are
The Community Watershed Clean Water Coalition, Inc., was formed in 1997, as a 501

(c)(3) organization, with the primary goal of preventing the construction, by NYC Department of Environmental Protection (DEP), of a massive, costly chemical treatment/filtration plant for Croton water. With high quality source water such as the Croton, the membership agreed that it would be far more effective and far less costly to protect the water at its source rather than indulge in a huge engineering project that would also require expensive future maintenance. We comprise over 50 member groups – housing, community, environmental and religious – throughout NYC, Westchester and Putnam Counties.

Marian,

Last week attendees at the DEF CON hacker convention in Las Vegas proved that it is possible to hack into our election computer systems in a matter of minutes.

That’s an enormous flaw in our democracy’s technology – but the good news is that we can solve the problem.

Oregon-style vote by mail is a solution that will increase voting security and accessibility.

There are many great reasons vote by mail should be adopted nationally – and protecting the integrity of our voting systems is a big one!

We need to spread the word and protect our democracy – share this post on Facebook!

Folks, please, Gov. Cuomo needs to hear from YOU daily, if possible. Put him on speed dial.. NYS made a grave mistake issuing permits for this dangerous high pressure gas transmission pipeline project now operational immediately adjacent to critical infrastructure at the deteriorating Indian Point nuclear power plant just 25 miles north of NYC. For some baseless reason, NYS thinks that by closing Indian Point in a few years, the catastrophic risk of a pipeline explosion at that location is somehow resolved. It's not. But, the decommissioning of the nuclear plant opens up a new opportunity for NYS to fully address these threats. It's time for NYS to get this right. Too much is at stake - tens of millions of lives and more!

Folks, please, Gov. Cuomo needs to hear from YOU daily, if possible. Put him on speed dial.. NYS mad...

Front page of Journal News coverage of interfaith vigil. Great work by Paola DalleCarbonare and Sr. Bette Ann Jaster and thank you to the people for sharing words from their faiths. The Governor's staff reached out to the organizers to set up a meeting. Why have the results of the risk assessment that he commissioned over 13 months ago not been released and why were 338 pages of the FOIL records redacted? Imminent DANGER to 20 million people because pipelines explode and rupture. A rupture of a Spectra pipeline occurred in Rhode Island just the other day. Cuomo must DENY the 401 water quality certification for the 2nd illegally segmented section of the Spectra Algonquin pipeline, Atlantic Bridge. Call today 518-474-8390. http://www.lohud.com/…/pipeline-vigil-cuomos-hous…/99843652/

Vigil at Governor Cuomo's house in Mt. Kisco calling on him to tell NYSDEC to deny 401 water quality certification for the 2nd section of the illegally segmented Spectra Atlantic Bridge pipeline and to shut down AIM at Indian Point. The risk assessment was never released. There is ongoing danger to 20 million people! Fracked gas pipelines rupture and leak. Even when Indian Point is closed, which will possibly be in 3-4 years, the risk continues due to radioactive fuel stored onsite. Paola DalleCarbonare Bette Ann Jaster

Food & Water Watch

Dear Marian,

Donald Trump wants to dismantle the Environmental Protection Agency, expedite more fracking and pipeline construction, and undermine efforts to combat climate change. Our New York elected officials are critical to resisting Trump's agenda and protecting New York's communities and climate — and they need to hear from us.

Join us for the Justice Monday rally in White Plains to resist Trump's assault on the environment!

We'll urge Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer to block Trump's anti-environmental agenda. And we'll call on Governor Cuomo to stop the construction of fracked oil and gas pipelines in New York and transition our state to 100% renewable power.

The Justice Monday rallies are organized by the Westchester Social Justice Community, a network of progressive groups working to push back against Trump's threat to our communities. Each week's rally highlights a different threat posed by Trump. Sign up to rally with us to protect the environment!

What: Justice Monday Rally: Defend the Environment!
When: Monday, April 3, from 12:00 p.m. to 1:00 p.m.
Where: Renaissance Plaza Fountain, Corner of Main St. & Mamaroneck Ave., White Plains, NY

RSVP to let us know you can join us.

At the rally, we'll hear from activists and community members about the threats to our region posed by Trump's plan to decimate the Environmental Protection Agency, as well as the risks from the expansion of fossil fuel infrastructure in New York, like the Pilgrim and Spectra pipelines snaking through our state.

See you there,

"There is no need for 'Indian Point 2.0' — the proposal to put natural gas power on or near the current Indian Point site. It would add untold, unnecessary risk to the already extremely dangerous mix of a high-volume natural gas pipeline and 2,000 tons of highly-radioactive nuclear waste by the banks of the Hudson River and within 50 miles of 19 million people." HIGH ALERT! DAILY URGENT ACTION FOR MONTH OF MARCH
ACTION #1
Please call:
-Governor Cuomo: 518-474-8390
-NYS Dept of Environmental Conservation Commissioner Seggos: 518-402-8545

Tell them: Reject the water permit for Spectra's illegally segmented Atlantic Bridge pipeline project.

ACTION #2
Please sign petition to Governor Cuomo to reject the water permit for Spectra's illegally segmented Atlantic Bridge project, the next phase of Spectra's dangerous massive Algonquin pipeline expansion: tinyurl.com/CuomoStopSpectraPipeline

BACKGROUND
Recently Spectra's Atlantic Bridge project, the second phase of their illegally segmented Algonquin pipeline expansion was prematurely approved by FERC and New York State is considering issuing a water quality permit for the project which would enable construction to go forward. Spectra is pressing for the approval as soon as possible so they can begin to cut trees before April 1st and begin construction. New York State should not be approving water permits for a project that is linked to significant risk of nuclear disaster impacting 20 million New Yorkers, and will contaminate our waterways and wetlands, ensure more air pollution, and destroy our health and climate.

Despite repeated warnings from numerous leading national pipeline, nuclear and disaster preparedness experts, Spectra Energy received approval from the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission (FERC) to expand their Algonquin pipeline. Recently, the first phase of that expansion - the 42 inch diameter, high pressure Algonquin Incremental Market (AIM) gas pipeline became operational and was constructed only 105 feet from critical safety infrastructure at the old, accident-prone Indian Point nuclear plant in northern Westchester near 2 earthquake fault lines. The experts warned that a pipeline rupture at Indian Point could result in a nuclear disaster worse than Fukushima and threatens more than 20 million people who live in the New York tri-state area.* Even if Indian Point is shut down - still years away - a pipeline rupture poses disastrous risks to millions of New Yorkers due to 45 years of highly radioactive spent fuel permanently stored on site. Governor Cuomo and NYS DEC Commissioner Seggos must stop ignoring safety experts' warnings about the permanent catastrophic risks to New Yorkers posed by the giant Spectra AIM pipeline and further expansions. Spectra illegally segmented its massive Algonquin pipeline expansion into 3 separate projects: Algonquin Incremental Market (AIM), Atlantic Bridge and Access Northeast, to avoid a full evaluation of the cumulative impacts.

Governor Cuomo recently stated that New York "must double down by investing in the fight against dirty fossil fuels and fracked gas from neighboring states" yet, New York continues to issue permits for dangerous, polluting and climate destroying fossil fuel pipelines and power plants in our communities polluting our air and water supplies, destroying our health and climate. New York must stop approving fracked gas pipelines like Spectra Energy's massive Algonquin pipeline expansion (AIM, Atlantic Bridge and Access Northeast) and fast track to 100% renewable energy.
