Four days. One unfamiliar problem. And an experience that helped shape what came next.

During the 2026 Mathematical Contest in Modeling (MCM), Jonathan Juarez and his Cal Poly Humboldt teammates spent four days modeling smartphone battery performance, digging into research, testing ideas, and deciding which factors mattered most.

Today, Juarez is applying that experience to research at the University of Kansas, where he is helping model community resilience to natural disasters and severe weather.

Differential equations look a little different when there’s no prescribed path to the answer.

SCUDEM gives students at two-year colleges a chance to use what they’re learning in class to tackle an open-ended modeling problem.

See why SCUDEM can be a great fit for a differential equations course: https://www.comap.org/blog/item/scudem-two-year-colleges

A graduate student. A decades-old mathematical problem. And a breakthrough that surprised some of the experts who had been working on it.

Quanta Magazine tells the story of Alex Cohen’s proof of the fractal uncertainty principle and the persistence, experimentation, and new ways of thinking that helped him get there.

It’s a fascinating look at how mathematical ideas develop, and how solving a difficult problem sometimes means finding an entirely different way into it.

What do students really gain from taking on a mathematical modeling challenge?

We asked four HiMCM advisors to share what they’ve seen firsthand. Their experiences offer a look at what students learn through the competition, from working as a team to tackling an open-ended problem and figuring out how to move forward when there isn’t one right answer.

Mathematical modeling was everywhere at MathFest 2026!

From coaching student teams and teaching the modeling process to modeling-first calculus, differential equations, and the first MMCM, COMAP staff and collaborators were part of conversations happening throughout the conference.

Take a look back at some of the sessions, ideas, and connections from MathFest: https://www.comap.org/blog/item/comap-brings-mathematical-modeling-to-mathfest-2026

What happens when you turn the MathFest exhibit hall into a mathematical modeling problem?

At MathFest 2026, participants took on COMAP's first Mathematical Modeling Challenge at MathFest (MMCM), working in teams to rethink the exhibit hall layout.

Back-to-school season is approaching, which means HiMCM and MidMCM registration will be opening soon. But what should you and your students be thinking about before the contest?

From practicing open-ended problem solving to building strong teams and getting comfortable with the modeling process, there’s plenty students can do now to get ready.

Here are some ways to start preparing for HiMCM and MidMCM: https://www.comap.org/blog/item/how-to-prepare-for-himcm-midmcm
