June is INTERNET SAFETY Month!
According to the National Center for Missing & Exploited Children (NCMEC)
• their CyberTipline received more than 186,800 reports of online enticement in 2023
• between 2021 and 2023, the number of online enticement reports increased by more than 300%, and
• in 2024, (through October 5) they have received more than 456,000 reports of online enticement.
Questions and conversations to have to keep youth safer online:
1. Where are you going online? (Content)
2. Who are you interacting with online? (Contact)
3. What are you doing online? (Conduct)
Certain online behaviors may increase the risk for online enticement and exposure to toxic behavior, harassment, inappropriate content, predation such as grooming for child sexual abuse material (CSAM), sextortion, trafficking, abuse, etc. Many of these apps do not protect personal information, providing hackers and predators access to groom/cause harm to youth.
Use the attached KNOW & TELL® Peer-to-Peer Ambassadors collection of “Potentially Unsafe Apps to KNOW about…” to start the conversation with the youth in your life!
