The ovenbird definitely appeared dead.

The bird lay, eyes closed, beside a window in Brooklyn Bridge Park. But when a rescuer went to examine the body, the bird woke up and squealed. Very much alive!

This bird was then gently closed inside a paper bag and transported to the Wild Bird Fund. After two days of care and observation, she was cleared for release.

Anyone who regularly monitors bird window collisions has encountered this situation. Like humans, birds can get knocked out by a blow to the head. Being surprisingly alive, or being feisty after being picked up, does not mean the bird is OK, though. Concussions manifest over time, and the bird may have other injuries you can’t see. This is why we always recommend taking a bird who has hit a window to a wildlife rehabber. The bird will have the best chance of survival if not left outside to fend for themself while recovering from injury.

The point is: lying down doesn’t mean dead! It’s good to check (only if you’re comfortable; use gloves or a cloth if you’re wary of touching the bird). If you’re not sure, you can place the bird in a closed paper bag anyway and wait for a bit. Pretty soon, it will be obvious. You can test the legs: on a dead bird, they will be stiff.

Please consider reporting both injured and dead window-collision victims to dbird.org. It’s quick and it will give many losts lives an afterlife in useful data.

Sidewalk Angels Foundation is so very proud of our Chrissy Beckles. We have known Chrissy since the beginning of her journey with the The Sato Project. She battled everything imaginable with with so many but she never ever gave up. WE would talk on the phone crying that she wasn't giving up. And she didn't. And thousands of satos have been saved because of her recilience (we had two).
Keep going my friend, there is much to do and we know you can do it.

Our President & Founder has been named to Forbes’ 2026 50 Over 50: Impact list, celebrating women who are redefining what’s possible at every age. And if you know Chrissy, you know this recognition is about so much more than a title.

Nearly 20 years ago, Chrissy came to Puerto Rico and saw the satos. She saw what they were up against, that they were suffering, that they needed a champion. And she decided she couldn’t just walk away.

That decision became a mission. And that mission became The Sato Project.

Since 2011, Chrissy has led TSP in rescuing, rehabilitating, and finding homes for more than 8,000 satos, while building comprehensive, systemic programs to address the stray dog overpopulation crisis in Puerto Rico at its roots.

It is more than fitting that she’d be honored with this incredible distinction in The Sato Project’s 15th year of operation.

And today, we are CELEBRATING THE HELL OUT OF HER. 🥹🎉

Chrissy, congratulations on being named one of Forbes’ 50 Over 50. We know this honor represents something much bigger than you. Big win for animals! The FDA announced that it plans to update its drug regulations by removing references to animal testing. This will help make it clear that companies don’t have to submit data from animal tests to have their drugs approved.
